One of the best things about New York is all the access to Broadway shows, events, and concerts. I’m always insanely jealous of the people that come in who need their makeup done before a concert—I wish I was going too! But on the bright side, this is when I usually get some of my favorite makeup requests.
I nearly screamed out of excitement when two sisters going to the Lady Gaga concert at Madison Square Garden wanted me to recreate a Gaga look for them. Having someone say, “turn me into Gaga” is a dream come true for me. Normally, my clients want natural looks or smoky eyes. I’m totally fine with that, but I enjoy doing something more adventurous once in a while too.
I was completely prepared for the task at hand and anxious to start. I had my tape, some black gel liner, fuchsia eye shadow, and some mascara. The girls seemed super pumped, especially the younger sister who just came back from college especially for the concert. She was so excited that she fell out her chair!
It took me a few minutes to realize that she was a little more than excited, and probably a little more than tipsy. She practically flung herself on me for support as she tried to climb back on the stool. And judging from her actions once she settled herself in the chair, it seemed like this girl was more interested in our store's chandelier than the work of art I wanted to create, but I was enjoying myself far too much to be upset. I didn’t even get mad when she pushed me aside halfway through the makeover—because she needed a cigarette break! In fact, my little monster was genuinely funny and had such a great personality.
While she twisted around in her seat and sang “Bad Romance” to me, I worked on creating the same Gaga look I've seen in many beauty tutorials. I must admit that my recreation came out slightly crooked and a bit sloppy, but it didn’t matter. The little monster pulled out her own tube of body glitter and slathered it all over her face.
I think I would have liked her just as much if she were completely sober.
