Q: What is your first beauty/makeup memory?
My first beauty memory, like most girls, was watching my mum apply makeup when I was a little girl. Something about her applying her lipstick made me mesmerized and I would watch without blinking. I still remember her first makeup tip she taught me which was,"Curl your lashes to make your eyes look bigger."
Q: What do you find important in feeling beautiful, inside and out?
First thing to feel beautiful is to accept that nobody is perfect. This means being able to accept your flaws and cherish them because it's part of who you are. To see beauty within yourself, you must be able to see beauty in other people. I think when a person is confident, they will just glow from within. Makeup doesn't make us anymore beautiful than we already are and it certainly does not conceal the ugliness either. As long as you have confidence, you can pull off anything! For example, ladies who wear dramatic makeup can pull it off purely from confidence.
Q: What's something most people find surprising about you?
When I meet supporters, many are surprised on how tiny I am. I stand only 150cm (4'11") tall so I am pocket-sized!
Q: How were you inspired to start your beauty blog and beauty channel?
After I graduated from my university and without a job, I was browsing the Internet one day and was amazed by all these fantastic makeup tutorials online. I pondered for an entire year before I uploaded my first tutorial. What inspired me was the possibility that I might be able to help girls pick up confidence around the world. The beauty community on YouTube allowed us to connect, be inspired and learn from each other.
Q: Do you feel creating beauty videos and blogging has changed your life?
Definitely! I have never felt so comfortable in my own skin. Where as before I even started making videos, I have always felt insecure. Putting yourself out in the Web can be a very scary thing but it has made me feel so much more confident. My viewers have inspired me and taught me so much and they keep motivating me to keep doing what I do.
Toughest part is the criticism you can get. I find that the more popular you become, the more prone you are to negativity. As a beauty guru, you're expected to be "perfect" and people can pick out the smallest things about you to make you feel insecure. But at the end of the day you just have to remember what you made your channel for. Don't let people who don't know put you down. Of course, I think about my wonderful viewers who constantly support me!
Q: What is the best part of being a guru?
Best part of being a guru is definitely that wonderful feeling of fulfillment you get. When I read messages from my viewers stating they have become so much more confident and are happier, it makes my day. Another great thing is being able to learn and share. I think when it comes to inspiration, you don't have to just get it from the catwalk or on TV. You can get inspiration from the people you meet and for me, that's what I get from the beauty community.
Q: Who are some of your favorite gurus?
There are always new up and coming gurus on YouTube. Pursebuzz was the first guru I watched on YouTube and I still love her video and energy! I also adore MichellePhan, Hollyannaeree, Raeview, frmheadtotoe, Andreaschoice, dope2111,xteeener, itsjudytime and pixiwoo. These are just top of my head, but there are so many more gurus that I adore who are extremely talented and beautiful!
Q: How did you come up with Bubbi Shirts and do you have a favorite?
Funny story actually! I studied Graphics Design at my university and it was a course I really didn't care much about. I graduated and at that time it was very difficult to find a job due to the credit crunch. I worked at a Chinese takeaway full time but put videos on the Web as a hobby whenever I had time. I noticed there was a significant number of my viewers always asking about the clothes that I wear. They always requested for fashion videos and one day I thought, "Why not combine my love for fashion with my graphic knowledge and create t-shirts?" It was very difficult for me to start, because I had a lot to learn about such things as cutting and fabric in such a short time. But I learned so much and enjoy it all. Knowing there are people wearing my designs around the globe brings butterflies to my stomach. I still can't believe it and I am thankful for everybody who supported me and helped me with the t-shirt range!
Q: What is your typical night time skim regime during the fall/winter season?
My skin gets so dry during the colder seasons. I must apply lip balm before I sleep and when I wake up. The heat radiators can suck the moisture from the air, leaving your pores looking bigger so I always keep a bowl of water in the room to combat the dryness. I also always moisturize before I sleep. If my skin gets very dry, I apply Laneige Sleeping Pack on my face and when I wake up and my skin always feels much softer and firmer.
Q: What is your favorite hairstyle to rock?
I am actually very low maintenance with my hair which is kind of why all my hair tutorials are quickies. I still think that having the ends of your hair curled (or even half way) makes any girl feel elegant and like a princess. Even just several pieces of hair curled will make a difference. I only style my hair using Sebastian Crude Clay because it is so versatile and can create texture in the hair without making hair dull or sticky. I also love to use coconut milk/oil or olive oil as a treatment on my hair to keep it healthy and shiny.
Q: Do you have a no-fail beauty trick or tip for our Beauties?
When you wake up and cleanse your skin, give a few splashes of cold water on your face. It will stimulate blood flow and give your skin an incredible glow. It is also my tip to minimize dark circles because it will restrict blood flow to the eyes.
Q: Do you have any exciting upcoming Bubz projects or news to share?
I will probably be returning back to the UK soon. It has been a very exciting year for me in Hong Kong but I feel like it's time to return home. Hopefully we will be releasing new products on our website, including beauty items!
