Awhile back, I asked why people were 'baking' their makeup and loads of you responded.

https://www.beautylish.com/t/ixaiac/what-is-baking-and-how-does-it-work?page=1

Well, today I decided to try out Jaclyn Hills Baking and Contouring tutorial... Step by step!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvH2ukztRzs

PRODUCTS USED
MUFE Face and Body
Urban Decay's NAKED Concealer
RCMA Setting powder
Viseart Neutral Matte's palette (To use the same shade
she contoured with.)
Smashbox blush in PASSION

How I felt about this

I would honestly not wear any sort of makeup. If I had to choose between 'baking a flawless face' and just going bare, I would go bare till I died.

My under eye area felt like someone took some sticky super glue, smeared on 5 layers of it with a knife and then powdered it.

My skin also felt so dehydrated after with all the powder on, I actually applied loads and loads of hydrating serum afterwards.

A lot of girls claim that it's meant to 'help control oily skin'.
I feel like if your skin makes so much oil that this looks good, then skin care needs to be evaluated.. not to mention that there are primers who can do the job without the over powdering.

Overall...

I can see why true professional makeup artists are not fond of YouTubers and Instagram. The only time this looked 'Flawless' was when I applied a 'skin blur filter'. And even then, you don't need so much powder for that anyway.

YouTubers and Instagrammers...

Please go kick rocks and leave it up to the true professionals of the industry :|

Disaster in the making with the camera (FACING FRONT BTW!!)

ROTFLMAO!! Good to see someone finally showing what this 'really' looks like, no filters no nothing. Excellent.

I know people like to bake, and to each their own...but for me, unless you are a stage performer or Betty Crocker, there's just no need to bake.  :)

@Jacqueline
With all these baking threads popping up, I wanted to ask for people to post their results when they tried it out... but results posted are edited. So I figured I would try it myself!
Baking is definitely for the KITCHEN! I could use some coconut baked goodies right now!!

I agree with everything you said! Even though it's just makeup at the end of the day, I do think a lot of girls and women have an unrealistic idea of makeup nowadays. There's no reason to "bake" your makeup to that extent every day. The most I like to do is bake the tiny area under my eye where I know my concealer will crease after an 8 plus hour day. Everyday makeup should be put together but not require all these extra steps which may be better for an event or maybe a night out. What gets to me the most is the overuse of concealer, youtubers definitely use wayyyyyy more than needed lol. Wish we could shout this message from the rooftops.

Kiran, the amount of concealer she used was crazy!
I did not want to waste this much concealer... way too expensive to be doing this shenanigans.

Kitty K.

And what's crazy... this is the final result the way YTers and IGers want the audience to see it. Using the face smoothing tool. Do I look flawless now? Of course I do... :|

I honestly prefer my face without all the caking, felt a lot better too! Angry zits and all.

I agree with you on the way YouTubers and IG does it. It doesn't look good in real life. I don't edit or filter my IG photos. Hate the fakeness of it. I do bake under my eyes; using a damp beauty blender with a little bit of powder on it. I only leave it for 3 min. I don't bake my entire face, or highlight with concealer. That many layers would be cakey as hell. I'm glad you did this. A lot of stuff on social media isn't translated well into real life. I used my flash so my skin texture is actually visible.

Oh my goodness it makes you look like a different person! absolutely stunning without it.

Great thread kitty, I'm dying over the first picture - you look like you dunked your face in powdered sugar!!

Very pretty Kim! Less is definitely more.

Thanks Pam! My face felt so awkward and uncomfortable too.

Sabrina, the best way to describe it... imagine applying one of those hard clay/mud masks... and then applying your make up over it. So uncomfortable!

I never understood baking, I always thought it was ridiculous so I've never tried it. I do highlight with concealer but I don't pile it on like other people seem to do. When they blend it out it pretty much takes up their entire face and I'm always just sitting there like "you just have concealer face, this isn't even highlighting anymore". I don't use any kind of blurring tools or anything when I post to Instagram, I just mess with the contrast, shadows, etc. to make the colors look better rather than make my skin look smoother/more perfect because I know my skin texture doesn't look perfect and I'm okay with that.

Kitty K.

Alexis, I will never understand why Jaclyn instructed to apply a foundation on and then to apply the amount of highlighter that I had to put on. It took up the majority of my face once blended out and it all I did was have an extra layer of texture.
I used MUFE Face and Body which is very natural.
Imagine these girls using these heavy matte foundations.. something like KVD which is very thick for a more 'full coverage' look or MAC... ew!

These YTers and IGers must have one hell of a budget for their dermatologists and estheticians!

I was always skeptical about baking myself. It looked like waaaaaay too much powder for anyone, let alone someone with dry skin, like myself. But one day I did try it to give it a fair chance. Now I do use concealer but I'm one of those rare people who never creases. I'm able to cover my dark circles, completely, but I do have deep set tear troughs that I'm also trying to cover and that has been challenging, because you can't just slap on a ton of concealer & expect it to be covered. It takes a couple of different shades of concealer applied in the exact spot, using enough powder to completely matte out any shine to further camouflage the troughs. At the same time, not over powdering, to avoid a thick, cakey look. Not an easy feat to accomplish. So, I basically tried baking to cover up my troughs. I was able to cover them, but I did have a heavy, masky caked on look. I agree, I would rather have my troughs lightly covered with my regular makeup routine rather than baking and ending up looking like Baby Jane (I know I'm dating myself with this reference).

Just the idea of seeing Baby Jane in person, at the time, sounds absolutely terrifying! Jaclyn does mention having dry skin or hinting at it in the video... she mentions she used to do it with products formulated for more oily skin too... wonder what that may have looked like??
I can deal with under eye bags, my cake face did not last past 5 minutes.

Thank you so much for sharing the REAL! I much prefer the beautiful you without all of that gunk! I can't use filters because I don't have them nor know how to use them.

I really, really hate how so many young woman are pressured into using so much product (and filters) that you can't appreciate their individual and real beauty!

Kitty K.

You're welcome, Tina! If you were here next to me, I could show you. It's as simple as downloading a photography app, and then just sliding left and right to adjust how edited you want your skin to be.

Sandra, I can't help but wonder how much Jaclyn might be getting from mentioning the products she uses. Especially since she was using other products before. Its all a business at the end!

I'm glad to hear that, Robin!

"YouTubers and Instagrammers...

Ouch... lol We aren't all bad. :-P

Funny enough I tried this the other day as a joke and my skin looked so awful after I chickened out on uploading it. I wish I had saved a pic to post here. lol Kudos to you for being braver than me! xD

Aug 27, 2016

Kitty K.

Kristen, I almost chickened out on doing it altogether. It made a big mess too! The powder was everywhere and tedious to clean up.

And my go kick rocks, to clarify, is aimed at the so-called 'Makeup artists' who have never done makeup on anyone else but themselves, yet feel they have earned that title... cough.. MannyMUA... cough... Jeffrey Star... Jaclyn Hill.. cough ahem.. Heidi Hamound (who's video is way more terrifying than Jaclyn's)... Bretman Rock.. Patrick Star...

All makeup ENTHUSIASTS. After knowing Alma, and Jackie.. along with joining in on other makeup groups.. I personally find it disrespectful that they give themselves a title they haven't earned.
They are great at promoting products, they are makeup Enthusiasts who promote. They receive compensation or gratis for doing so. And the FTC has begun to moderate them since they tend to not specify that they are doing so.

I highly doubt Angelina Jolie or some A-list celebs will pay them a dime to do their make up. I definitely wouldn't.

And to clarify, as I know Jaclyn worked at MAC.
I almost worked at MAC through a hook-up. I have no training or certification, which I expressed immediately as I was under the impression that you needed to be certified to work there.
I was told they want to sell, and would send me to their classes to receive some training on applying- but to sell. Hill's rambling about products is something that comes from working at MAC. They don't want you to quietly apply products, but to talk about what you're doing constantly to push the client to purchase it.

I know I wouldn't see true pros like Kevin James Bennet, Jordan Liberty, Billy B, Lisa Eldridge, Monika Blunder, and Scott Barnes just to name a few baking on their YT channels. Jordan Liberty has demo several times on the difference between makeup applied well, and all these YT techniques. His why you shouldn't contour with bronzer video and his IG make up video show flawless how overrated it all is. Every time I meet someone who's gaining an interest to make up I direct them to his channel.

No worries. I figured that's who you were referring to. I've never heard of Heidi Hamound but if she is worse than Jaclyn that's pretty horrifying. One thing I did think was funny about the Jaclyn video you posted is that you can hear her unwrapping some of the products as she goes but yet she says they are her favorite? Sometimes I wonder how her fans don't notice stuff like that.

Back to baking though. I am really curious how the whole jawline bake thing (not sure what to call it) got started. I don't care so much if people bake their under eyes. I'd never do it but to each their own like Jackie said earlier. But the jawline drives me nuts. I've never seen a single person who bakes their jawline have it look good. It reminds me of men who have had beards for a long period of time and then shave. The skin is always a bit lighter where the beard was from the sun not hitting it. lol

Kitty K.

I caught onto that as well! Either they sent her a never ending supply of brushes or her all time favorite isn't much of a favorite. Especially since she claimed to only use that brush for that purpose only.

If you truly want to entertain the whole baking thing, Heidi's video is one to gawk at

And then ironically, Shaina's video also pop's up... great laugh ;)
