Hi all, this is just something I was pondering while I was getting my nails done today. What are your opinions on the seasonality of colors? Is it weird to wear black nail polish in the summer, or orange in the winter? Is it strange to wear dark purple eyeshadow in the summer, or a pop of teal in the winter? Are dark lips only fall/winter appropriate? Personally, I don't care much for the seasonality of products or colors...my nails are dark matte grey right now, black is my favorite color to wear, no matter the weather, and if I feel like wearing violet lipstick in the middle of winter, I do it. But I'm curious about the opinions of others, because I know that not everyone feels the way I do, and not everyone would wear super dark lipstick in the middle of summer. Another little aspect of this is that everyone always tends to go lighter (in both weight and color) with their makeup in the spring and summer; I understand not wanting to wear a lot in the summer so that no one melts, but I feel like summer is sort of a good time for bright colors, as well (though I'll wear brights all year round if I'm in the mood). I guess this is just a really random rant, but I'd love to hear what you guys think about colors and seasons, and if you guys think it's really necessary to consider the seasons when picking nail/makeup/clothing colors? Any and all thoughts welcome :)

I'm the same way. I painted my nails black and dark grey last night lol. I think because Canada's winters are heavy and last from September/october through to at least march, no one here really cares about whether it's a "fall" or "spring" color. Since we don't really get those in between seasons. I know I was on Instagram last night just browsing and saw a girl wearing like a deep dark red lipstick, and someone commented and said that it should only be worn in fall. She commented back and said "I paid 25$+ for this lipstick, and Canada has about a week of fall every year. I'm not limiting it to only 7 days of wear." And that's exactly how I feel about it. Why would I buy a lipstick or eyeshadow and limit it's use to only a few certain weeks, when it looks good all year round.
I'm the same way with clothes. Since I do live in Canada, I wear more layers in the winter but I'll still wear bright colors and I still wear black in the summer lol.
That being said, there are trends that people stick to. I know here the bright colored designed leggings were really in during the winter, and now it's bright sun dresses and short shorts. But I don't tend to stick with them.

Wet n Wild's Cherry Bomb lipstick is my "power colour" that I wear when I need a confidence boost, and I'll wear it any time of the year even though it's a pretty dark colour. I understand why people say pastels are for spring, brights for summer, etc., but I don't see the point in being too strict about it. There's too much to enjoy experimenting with to take those "rules" too seriously.

No matter what season it is I can't ever leave my coral lipstick and black nail paint. Rather than season my choice of colours depend on my mood (:

That's completely fair. Canadian winters are harsh, for real. I can't even imagine doing more than visiting a couple times in the winter. I never got into those leggings though...I'm not much of a pattern person, but I see what you mean about them being more of a "trendy winter" item.

Hannah K.
I know that feeling, Lizzy, my power color changes often but recently it's been Tom Ford Violet Fatale (which is utterly gorgeous) and I would wear it absolutely whenever, no questions asked. And Snea, I appreciate that because my moods and the weather of the day tend to influence what I'm wearing :)

Exactly Hannah season has nothing to do with it 😬

I agree. I don't care either for the seasons of colors. its like winter and fall are depressing seasons enough as it is why not brighten them up with brighter colors

That's a really good point, Aya!

They aren't that bad after the first one. You definitely get used to it. And where I live (western Canada) is nowhere near how bad it is in eastern Canada.
Yeah, its hard to stay trendy while wearing a big puffy winter jacket lol. Leggings are kind of the only way to show any fashion while being outside.
Definitely agree on the moods. Some days I want to be wearing fierce dark lipstick with dark sultry eyes, then sometimes the next day I'll wear bright pink Barbie lipstick with light eyes. :)

My best friend lives in Toronto, I visited her in January once it was flipping cold. But I see your point, layers are hard to keep stylish, because usually they make people look like a marshmallow :) but yeah. I have a pretty wide range of stuff I like to wear, as well lol it's kind of absurd to think about :)
May 23, 2014
Alyx T.
Yeah were all often marshmallows lol :) I went to California in December a few years ago, and it honestly amazed me. It was like +30 degrees C (not sure what that comes to in F) but really warm, and all the locals were wearing these and complaining it was freezing. My family was in dresses, shorts and tank tops lol. They were wearing outfits we'd wear in -25C weather, puffy jackets, scarves, plenty of layers. Some even wore gloves, it was so crazy to us. But that's their cold weather, and I really wish I lived there lol.

Lol nah, I live in miami and it's about 40C there all year round. Our cold snaps are like 18C and everyone freaks out like the world is ending, it's completely hilarious. But, of course, we have all of the women from Latin American societies who dress up to pick their kids up from preschool, so everyone is always stylish and they're all really about the color "rules." Like...I wore black lipstick one day and I'm pretty sure one mom grabbed her kid and told him I worshipped Satan.
May 23, 2014
Alyx T.
Yeah, it was just so funny. We were like dying, coming from -30C to +30C and they're all like "omg it's so cold my nose is going to freeze off". They were very stylish though.
Yeah. I wore black lipstick to school, and I only had two classes at the time, Cosmo and art. And my teachers loved it, the students in my class said really awesome nice things about it, but The students not in my class were the same way, would avoid me and stare at me like Satan himself was behind me lol. No one here is really like that. Like you have the few rich women or the families that go to private school, but most of the moms here are very comfort or fashion. Most of the people unless their rich or dressing up for something, are very basic with fashion. Like I go to our "famous" west Edmonton mall, and the only people dressed up are tourists lol. It has like a prada store, Michael kors and all the big name stores, but barely anyone who lives here buys them. It's usually tourists who are fashionable.
May 23, 2014
Hannah K.
Lol nice, I always think it's funny to see how tourists dress when they're in places like that. Like...okay say I go to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. All the wealthy Brazilian women there will be wearing gorgeous sundresses with expensive jewelry and fancy sandals to go to the pool...and then there's me. In a t shirt and flip flops. It's just awesome how cultures can be so completely different stylistically!

I wear whatever colors I feel like wearing no matter the season. but I do tend to have more bright colorful clothes for spring & summer.

I enjoy the seasonality of makeup. granted, I will wear black and neutrals whenever because I feel they go in anywhere. but, as of current I have a bright orange nail polish I wouldn't wear in the winter, and in the winter I probably would never wear bright green eyeshadow. I enjoy it but never judge others for not seeing it that way. :)
May 23, 2014
Hannah K.
Completely understandable, Che. Not everyone views colors and seasons the same way, so I'm glad someone has a different opinion than I do so I can understand it a bit better :)

I like all colors always but I do also love certain colors for seasons because I love embracing seasons if that makes sense. When I think of warm weather I always am in the mood for brighter colors. Wearing bright green nail polish in the summer makes me happy. Wearing black nail polish in the winter makes me feel sexy. I like embracing seasons but I don't ever hate when other people don't. If anything I'm more likely to wear a black dress in the summer than wear a yellow dress in the winter. In the winter I usually always stick to dark and I can't really tell you why.

I wear black year round, but occasionally wear white in summer. I think I wore a coral blouse once last year..lol I just wear lighter fabrics in warmer weather. I keep my nails deep, blood metallic ruby or black for most of the year, but I have been sporting a pink take on French nails with a hint of shimmer this Spring. My eye makeup is never seasonal and I have about 30 shades of Red lipstick that I wear year round. I'll occasionally hit up a hot pink, but that's based on mood. I really love my black clothing and dark denim all year. I'm soooo sick of people asking, "Aren't you hot?!" all summer. It's quite maddening.

Where I live our seasons are all pretty much the same. The leaves don't change in autumn, the only difference between winter and spring is a little more rain (except this year). The only "season" we have is wildfire season, haha. Which, due to our drought, is now year-round. So no, colors don't matter so much here.
Summer is supposed to get well over 110F this year. It was in the 80s starting in March so I don't doubt it will happen. This is why humans invented air conditioning... I probably won't wear much makeup this summer simply because of the heat. Unless I feel like impersonating the Wicked Witch of the West ("I'm mellllltiiiiiinggg!") ;)

I love in quebec so trust me I know cold weather lol. but I see what you mean Hannah... it is a trend here to go dark (black and dark browns) in winter and fall and white or brights in summer and spring. I have nothing against it and do what I want. howeevr I must admit when I get tan I like have bright nails to make it pop. as for makeup... I don't really believe in it. I mean they are colors you apple to your face so I don't see the problem. however the other day I was thinking of using my mac cyber and didnt use it because I was scared it was too weird. and I was just about to post a thread asking if its ok when I saw this. what do you think?
May 23, 2014
Lara C.
The fact that there are these informal rule and trends made me question myself I guess.

I think it all depends on what a person likes.
I have lived in Miami all my life, so the idea of seasonal colors goes right out the window.
However, I personally enjoy doing seasonal colors. I don't mind wearing icey blue nail polish with snowflakes and drinking hot chocolate in the middle of Miami's 'Winter' even though it's 85 Degrees outside.
It's just something I do for fun since I don't get the pleasure of engaging in all these winter activities and all I have are my memories from when I was 5 years old and living in New York.

I agree with olivia. I don't even pay attention to that stuff, I just wear what I want(:
