I was recently reading Glamour magazine, and upon reading I found how many mistakes they made about makeup and hair! In more than one issue (they are both recent), the journalist suggested using Mane and Tail hair shampoo and conditioner, and using bronzer for contouring. I am no expert, but I know that that information is incorrect! They were also calling a gradient eye a smokey eye and referring to a blended look as a cut crease, when it clearly wasn't! I don't think it was a mistake of the journalist either, as many of the journalists made the mistake across a few issues of the magazine.
My advice is not to believe everything you read in a magazine or in the media, and not to believe everything that so called 'industry experts' say.

Ikr! Most popular magazines just try to appeal to the masses, instead of trying to teach proper technique/theories. The product suggestions they use are pretty much whatever they are advertising in that issue. Plus, a lot of beauty editors lack formal training. they're are some amazing editors out there, but sometimes, they just wanna make money.

Alma, it definitely changed my view on YouTube. That was my makeup haven before I stumbled upon beautylish. Since everyone contoured with warm bronzers and called their gradient eyes smokey eyes, I didn't know any better. Now I take everything I see on YouTube tutorials with a grain of salt.

I have to say Alma, it definitely changed my view on YouTube as well. Now I don't even watch videos, because I'm just like no..no..nooo. Lol. Though, I'd always find it quite odd that they used bronzer before beautylish anyways, it just didn't look right to me lol.

Interesting That Beautylish has changed your views :) But when you see info do you think it's true? do you look who the resource of info is from? Maggie is on point about the Magazines it cater's to what they think is the in right now and right now it's BOLD faces with that purchases of Products to create that Bold face is flying off the shelves No matter if correct or Not.

Yeah, what made me change my opinion on makeup was partially BL, but I've also been studying makeup books, so I learned techniques and stuff from trained professinals vs. beauty enthusiasts. Although most of them are written in the late 90's early 2000's so some of the trends have changed, they are still really useful. BL changed who I watch on youtube. I mostly like to watch real MUA's now, I watch some "guru's" for product reccomendations and inspiration though.

Yes Renay the Bull's eye of highlighting (Instagram Face) lol There is a way to do it but the real technique is subtle but not over the top of the brow these people are taking it to the MAX! even if they try and filter it I could still see it. Maggie I'm with you on the Books,I'm before social media so books and Hands on experience is the key but from the Raw mind of actually getting it down.Real MUA's is the way to go :)

I've just been wondering if they are going to be changing their ways to the way that society uses things? Just like grammar... I'm a huge ELA geek and I have noticed that in the dictionary they put things like "food baby. "Twerk" and so on... Like what if the terms totally change, like using the term "gradient eye" as a smokey eye... Then this will completely change makeup definitions and confuse new makeup users! Something to think about

Hahah, bullseye, that's funny. I've never cleaned up my brows, and when I saw people doing it with concealer that was like 5 shades lighter I was like what the heck? Lol. It looks really weird..

I think since getting into makeup there are very few things I take to heart without doing proper research. And in doing research, and sometimes because of just common sense, my view on things have changed.
For example, the term 'makeup guru' irks me, an it has from the get go. There are VERY few people I see as gurus and my standards for it are high. Jackie and Robert Jones are on that list for me personally, no one else yet. Everyone on YouTube wants to be a 'guru' but doesn't have the knowledge to back it up. Everyone wants to be an MUA and while many are fabulous there are just as many that lack proper skill or knowledge. Like on another app, I had one woman swear to me that a gradient eye was a smokey eye and that there were many types of smokey eyes and she knew because she had been an MUA for 8 years.
I make it clear that I am a makeup enthusiast and I don't want to be referred to as anything else. I just happen to love makeup a lot and do more research then the average person, but that happens with everything I'm into.

OMG! Me and Makeup Mommy (Jacqueline H.) have had this conversation SO many times. I'm a google baby. So I'm always on the internet trying to research things instead of doing it the old school way, with books, etc. The internet is a glorious thing but it can also be such a haven for unreliable sources and often inaccurate info. I always trusted YouTube/magazines, until I joined Beautylish. I can honestly say I'm a much informed person since joining less than a year ago. I've grown immensely and learned more correct info on beautylish than I've learned in years! YouTube can be so cringeworthy now that I see horribly wrong makeup tips being spread like wildfire. I seriously think everybody interested in beauty should have BL in their life. #BeautylishSavesLives lol

Oh yes Jackie (Your makeup Mommy Jacqueline H) lol was over my house this pass weekend and we had a makeup talk like always and we just can't seem to understand how YT or Instagram faces have a great popularity. we wonder if any see what we see? or is it us? we always wondered how all you ladies really truly thought of all the looks you all see?

I do prefer the Instagram makeup girls though. Most of them are just showcasing their makeup and endorsing products. They aren't like passing off bad info. I find their makeup to be way better too
