"I'm A Makeup Artist!"

The thing is, this post is not about makeup artists. It's about average girls doing average things with makeup, and claiming to be amazing at what they can do. I'm not saying makeup artists who usually do neutral looks are not artists, and are not good at what they do. It's the people who say "OH-EM-GEEEE GUYZZZ DONT YOU JUST LOVE MY MAKEUP, I'M REALLY TALENTED, I'M BASICALLY A MAKEUP ARTIST! YEAAAAH!" while all they're doing is the same look, that requires little to no skill.

Why all the trash talk ladies? If you don't like someone's channel...don't watch it
If someone's self confidence is bothersome to you...that's YOUR problem
Keep the peace high and the negativity low

Tiffany, who is trash talking? I don't think anybody has at all. If you think this is trash talk, how did you make it through life, and especially high school?

@Vanessa, I understood what you were trying to say! I can tell it was NOT trash talk and more of an observation on people not showing a broad range of skill while they claim to have the ability to do so. I actually don't watch videos on youtube, read beauty blogs, or have many girlfriends, but I did experience this a lot in art school throughout my lifetime!

I mean, I am not a great artist in most techniques, so I found myself prefacing a lot of my project theses and critique displays by acknowledging that fact and mentioning my strengths and weaknesses in areas because I found it irritating to claim to be superior without truly showcasing skills worthy of a superior title. I had skill in a few niche subjects, so I never called myself an "artist" but specifically a "fashion illustrator" or "technical pattern drafter and draper" or whatever I was specializing in, because I found the point that you made with "makeup artists" to be irritating in the art scene as well. Its funny because if these people put a simple word like "aspiring" in front of what they were claiming they were a master at, it would be admirable!

There is the whole "fake it 'til you make it," idea, which is awesome sometimes. But I suppose there is still extreme effort involved. Perhaps some people don't realize they're not doing different things, they may actually believe that their looks are different and I guess I can't blame them for that

@Vanessa, gosh, after reading all the replies and trying to write a post, I can surely see how difficult it is to describe what you mean without the possibility of it being misconstrued

I made it through life and high school just fine...and telling negative ppl to keep their mouths shut has certainly helped... I hope I didn't offend you or anyone that wasn't my intention...I just feel like this board has a lot of negative ppl on it and that's unacceptable to me but this is just my opinion
I meant no harm at all

okay just a question and I hope I don't offend anyone. Just a serious question.. isn't an artist an artist? for example if I decided to pick up a paint brush one day and start painting random pictures wouldn't I technically be considered an artist still? Isn't an artist just a person who does art and isn't make-up ( at any skill level ) art? I'm seriously just looking for clarification and don't mean to say that they or any of you are or aren't artists.

anddd I just actually read through all the comments and someone's already asked the same thing. nvm!

That's what I believe Amanda...art isn't a title it's an action...from kindergarten finger painting to highly skilled oil painting
We should just appreciate it for what it is

You are right amanda

I agree Amanda but i can see where people are coming from when they get annoyed that they have been in a 3 year course to get a title that someone else has self proclaimed. I can see how that would upset some people but i think its what you do that proves who you are not a piece of paper with your name on in fancy writing

Holly I get it too. I'd be pissed if I worked my ass off to graduate and earn that title officially but some people get lucky or are just naturally skilled with MU the same way some people are naturally skilled musically or in fine arts. The difference I think is the people that have something to prove they actually have learned and satisfied some standard of knowledge that goes ALONG woth everything MU related. I think the pay off for that would be a lot better than some youtube videos.

A kindergarten kid doing finger painting is not an artist, he's artistic. It's a big difference. An artist requires a set of skills, understanding of technique, creativity, talent and knowledge about the past and present history. In every art, there's a meaning, a story being it. To me, a makeup artist know how do makeup on someone else in a professional matter, someone who's know different techniques, knows how to use them appropriately and make beautiful, polished, professional finished look. If some youtube gurus has experience and can achieve that, well they are MUA. Just like self-taught makeup artists like myself.

Artist : one who professes and practices an imaginative art...it's not your place to decided what IS and ISN'T art

So what Tiffany is saying is that art is subjective, not objective. If a 5 year old thinks his/her drawing is art, then to him or her it is art, and who are we do debate it?

Honestly, this discussion has been going so many different ways now, so I will respond to the first post only.

"Does anyone else ever get annoyed when you hear or see girls who only do very neutral looks or only can do few variations of the same look claim to be amazing at makeup,
or even go as far to say they're a makeup artist, or have more skill then others?"

No and no. I don't get annoyed when I see 13 - 15 year olds on youtube saying that they are "amazing" at doing their make up. Even if it is, as you state "only very natural looks
or only few variations of the same look". Why would I care? If they do one certain type of make up really well, then certainly their underdeveloped brains must have gotten some
kind of confidence boost, why would that bother me? I myself know I can do amazing things with make up.

And if they claim to "have more skills than others" as you put it, again, why would I care? Maybe they do, maybe they don't. And if they claim to be as good as QueenOfBlending or
MizzChievious or.. vintageortacky or whatever guru out there, why do you care? You see the work they do for yourself, don't you? You see how talented some beauty gurus are, how
versatile, how bold and beautiful their work is.

So what if those teens who have just discovered make up, or are a bit arrogant and cocky say they are better in any way, or what if they call themselves artists? I advise anyone not to get
butthurt over their claims of being "an artist" or "have more skill than others". If they truly believe they are make up artists, then it won't hurt you, or me, and heck, I am pretty sure it won't hurt
ACTUAL make up artists. They will still get paid for doing legit work, they can't be harmed by what some people say on youtube.

Yes that's exactly what I mean

Yes, Art is subjective but not the artist. I’m not saying a drawing from a 5 yo kid is not art but it doesn’t make him an artist. I don’t think he profess himself has an artist unless he's a prodigy like Picasso. The kid is just having fun whereas an artist it's is passion or even profession. Same thing for dancing, which is an art form too, everyone dances but does it mean that everyone is a dancer? No. Dancers are athletes and require a certain knowledge of technique for any type of dancing.

I guess we will just have to agree to disagree :)

The word "guru" is thrown around so loosely. Now, ANY girl with a camera & Urban Decay Naked palette on her eyes calls herself a Guru. It's odd.

Afredita, you're right, this topic has gotten spun into so many different things. People took this in so many different ways. Was I talking about YouTubers? No, not really but it definitely applies. Was I talking about teens? No, but once again it applies. I'm talking about girls, women, men and boys, who are constantly talking themselves and their 'skills' up, when there
s no real truth behind the claim, because they're really no where near where they keep saying they are, because they can only produce one nice look, with simple color changes.

Natalie-I feel like you and I have the same type of views, lmfao. Almost every post I see you reply in, i'm like, "Yuuup" :) Also, I tried the Revlon Color Silk, LOOOOVE it, it's so deep and black, and I notice a really nice sheen when i'm in the sun!

Gen, I believe that's what I said in the post, lmfao. That just because they have one look down, doesn't mean you're good with makeup. and no where near an artist, and shouldn't boast about your skills just because you can do one look very well. It's not hard to practice one thing and be great at it.

Dec 18, 2012

Vanessa C.

Yes, yes, stick to what you know. But, that's the WHOLE POINT, is if you only know one thing, there's no need to brag about it and claim to have skill when there is no real skill there, just a repetitive look that could be done by most people, maybe not as perfect as the type of people i'm talking about, because they've been doing the same look for most of their makeup wearing lives.

@Helene, so Da Vinci, Monet, Raphael, Michael Angelo are not artists because they didn't actually go to school for that, they were simply artistic? and of the poets? and musicians who did not go to school but we're blessed with talent? just artistic, not artists? prodigies who are even too young to go to school?

Emma, really? Lmfao, no that doesn't mean he's not a musician, but that really doesn't compare. But, to use your example, imagine if that piano player could only play one song, but he played it perfectly because he's had tons of practice, does that make him a musician? No. The piano is the makeup, and if they can play lots of songs, and play them well, hes a musician. If someone can do different looks, and do them well, then they have skill.

Dec 18, 2012

Drea L.

Emma, I think what Vanessa is trying to say is, there's a difference between someone who can play great quality music on the piano & some one who can only play "marry had a little lamb" but still places themselves to be on the same pedestal as the famous musician.

I think a lot of people are taking what she's saying out of context.

Perfect example Emma :o

Dec 18, 2012

Vanessa C.

Tatina and Emma-No, that wasn't a perfect example. A pianist is someone can play the piano, and play different songs. Not just one. It was no where near a perfect example, it helped further my point. And Emma, wtf? "No, the group labeled Musicians is the makeup and the piano is the one particular look/style" No. A song is the look, the piano is the makeup.
