"I'm A Makeup Artist!"

A true makeup artist should be able to do an array of looks from natural beauty looks to dramatic runway. Yes I do find it annoying that a lot of YouTube "beauty gurus" are just pretty girls doing their makeup. I went to school for several weeks to learn to do makeup and know what to use for different skin tones and textures. A true makeup artist knows how to apply makeup to bring out the best in everyone, not just themselves.

Sydneydale A. & Brittany R. -- My thoughts exactly. Passion is passion no matter how much skill you have nobody can tell you that you don't love makeup just because you don't make money for it. However, my personal opinion is that although a lot of people said it shouldn't matter to others what title these girls call themselves, that was the topic of the thread so I understand everybody's varying thoughts. I understand everyone and I say this because I love art. I appreciate it and I see beauty in everybody's work. I just happen to understand the girls who get frustrated by others who give themselves titles when they probably aren't even in that industry. Somebody said that if they do makeup on themselves and enjoy it & want to call themselves makeup artists, it shouldn't matter.. but from what I can understand, Vanessa originally was referring to girls including themselves in the profession of makeup artistry -- so, if my husband fixes a few pipes around my house and does it well, is he a plumber? No. He probably could be.. but he's not. So yes, those girls calling themselves makeup artists probably could be in the industry but they're not. With that being said, I understand Vanessa's thoughts but I also understand everyone else's and I think the point of this thread should be more of an "agree to disagree" situation where if nothing else, at least we can all walk away appreciating the beauty in how we all think differently and have the right to have different opinions. :)

& To the ladies who seem to keep going at one another with negativity and attitude, I don't think anybody is losing sleep over girls calling themselves makeup artists. This just began by one girl trying to express herself so I don't think there's need to be smart about it since as we've come to learn Beautylish is about expression whether you agree or not. There's a nice way to have varying opinions and I think we should all practice that. Especially (as I said in another thread) in light of the tragedy that has just his the US. Lets all be nice to each other, love one another, & appreciate that we are all still here to see how different minds think. I hope everyone is well and that nobody was affected by the recent shooting in CT or any other tragedy for that matter. <3

For me, "makeup artist" is the term for a professional who takes clients and makes a living off their services. I look at it as an occupational title I guess. I don't think those who don't have clients or do makeup as a living are any less of an artist but at times I do feel the term "makeup artist" is a be a bit overused and a vague term. I view those who do makeup but not for a living as more of "makeup enthusiasts." They are obviously artistic and can be called artists but I do think at some point there should be some distinction as to what separates someone who wants to do it for a living and those who dabble. But still, it's tricky because this is a rare thing. Not many professions have a title that people can bestow upon themselves if they want it and have others acknowledge it as true. For example, you can call yourself a doctor but until you've gone to med school and graduated no one is going to recognize you as a doctor. It's different here because the information is readily available and can be applied by almost anyone. There's not so many guidelines or requirements to go through before you can claim the title...if that makes any sense.

Bottom line is that I don't consider everyone who can put their makeup on well a makeup artist. That's not to say they aren't good at it and shouldn't be respected, but I do think its a term meant for someone within the industry, not just someone who enjoys makeup as a hobby.

But as with anything dealing with any kind of art, its all a matter of opinion and everyone sees things differently, so this is just my take on it :)

Sometimes people will come up to me and ask me if I'm a makeup artist, and I always say that I'm not. I'm not certified, and I don't do makeup on other people. It's just my hobby pretty much. I would never claim to be a makeup artist even though makeup is my passion. I don't WANT to be a makeup artist!

I think when I mentioned an example of people from my art schools, I confused everyone.... because the original post says nothing about talent or training or respect/lack of respect, but wanting to see people display their RANGE as an artist.

I've had to write so many papers and final theses about the topic of "What IS art?" or what isn't, and it is the most ambiguous idea, its almost as difficult as an essay I had to write about "time as a concept" two terribly difficult and debatable topics to write about. Its almost impossible to be define artistry- so no one is right or wrong. BUT no one said anything about anyone not being an artist because they haven't paid fees and gone to school or being an artist just because they pay for school(that's BS, formal training isn't a prerequisite for greatness).

I think it was supposed to be a discussion about the appreciation of men and women who show range in their looks (its like including the "breadth" and "depth" in an art portfolio). I don't think it was meant to be an attack on anyone or anything, just a longing and appreciation for variety. VERY misconstrued and misinterpreted from the original post, people keep arguing points that weren't even made in the original post
