Does anyone else ever get annoyed when you hear or see girls who only do very neutral looks or only can do few variations of the same look claim to be amazing at makeup, or even go as far to say they're a makeup artist, or have more skill then others?

Some artists have a style they are good at and that's what they advertise. I.e. bridal beauty or special effects. Honestly it can take talent to perfect a neutral/natural look if the model does not already have that look. So it would take contouring, the correct shades of makeup etc to achieve certain looks. Chill. If you have talent, don't worry about the others... You'll shine if you have good marketing skills/ true talent.

I'm not talking about actual artists, I dont think you understood. I'm talking about average girls with very average skills, claiming to be amazing because they have one look down pretty well. Also, I understand artists fall into their own styles, but most can do plenty of other looks then just bridal, even if that's the bulk of their clients.

I don't claim to be a makeup artist but I can do amazing things with makeup. But for everyday wear I keep my loom pretty simple. I have a 1 and a half year old running around and another on the way soo I'm not going to do crazy makeup everyday.

I worked hard and paid alot of money to do my degree in photographic/bridal make up, my friend got a job for YSL and claims to be a make up artist - no contourint is necessary just sales. . so yes it can get pretty annoying x

This 100% reminds me of YouTube girls... The ones that add a different colored eyeliner to that basic neutral eye they've uploaded a billion times & call it "edgy & daring" Either that, or they give us the same eyeshadow look, same shape, same blending, same everything, just different colors. Like you said, just simple variations to simple looks
I hate to be negative, but I know exactly what you mean because it's something that definitely bothers me in the YouTube community. It's a huge pet peeve of mine. That's why I cherish the pixiwoo girls SO much because they give us so much variety & so many versatile looks.

I'm no make up artist and honestly I feel I suck at doing make up but I do try!!! I hate watching young girls (like 10) swearing they already are make up artists and are pro and post videos. Mind you there are some young and talented (mrs. Emma for one) but its annoying for somebody who is learning to see the same over and over again with slight differences. I won't learn much that way

that's why I don't understand the YouTube thing and why are they called Guru's? How is that,I've been doing this for years and just don't get how people would trust that info or truly believe that they made up the tricks or ideas lol because most of it is old school tricks nothing new.uk also agree with Andrea G and Isabella C.

Kathleen if you hadn't seen or watched the videos would you have been interested in makeup? And do you believe what they say do you trust it and why? Just asking because its interesting how a lot of people are so into makeup and buying cosmetic more then ever.  :-)

Actually I completely understand.. For example I love all mediums of art. I draw. I paint. I do it very well and I have sold paintings of mine HOWEVER I am not a professional artist. It is a passion I have that I love but it's not my career nor do I have years of experience in it. I think girls don't realize that doing really beautiful makeup on themselves or their family/friends doesn't make you a makeup artist. I don't like it because there are people who dedicate their lives to establish themselves as artists and makeup artists to have anyone just come in and sort of fake the title is unfair.

QueenOfBlending and I have had a talk about this and we dislike it, especially her, since she actually gets paid for it. I've been on YouTube since 2009 (well, my current account was made in '10, I believe) and I don't even call myself a GURU which, to me, would be one step down from makeup artist~

Like somebody else said, it's not about people being paid for this as their job and they usually do something neutral, like they're working on teenagers for prom mostly or brides and what have you. It's just the silly girls on YouTube that automatically pull the guru/MUA title after making three videos, hahaha.

I'm not burning their houses down or anything, but I do roll my eyes whenever I see 95% of YouTube give themselves the title when it's not earned.

YouTube is fun so I'm all for people following "gurus," I follow them myself. Just... you're silly when you're calling yourself a professional makeup artist if you've only been doing most of the makeup on yourself. :P

I agree that the YT girls make it easy for average girls to learn how to do makeup. They are indeed very entertaining and do provide useful tips, as well as helping people find affordable good products. There's nothing wrong with that at all. I think originally the girl whom asked the question was simply referring to the use of the title makeup artist. Overall, makeup is an outlet of creativity and expression that surely everyone has the right to share with others or display. There's valid points on both sides of this and everyone will always have their own opinion. :)

I disagree with some of the things said, for example there are lots of really well known makeup artists that are self taught, i don't think you can only call yourself a makeup artist if you've done a course, i think if your over 16 and your doing freelance work and getting paid for doing people you don't knows makeup then your a makeup artist.

I'm self taught :-) but curious about Vanessa question and wonder why the title of MUA is thrown around through you tube I believe there are some real MUA and I also think a lot of the others That claim to be.I think its great girls have an outlet to learn but feel there is other aspects of the art and every look seems to be repetitive And also its not about the cost or brand of the makeup or brushes its what you do with it all, some of that stuff that's claim to be must haves are stuff you don't really need to make it happen.for me I think some times the name MUA isn't taken seriously because it is used in so many different ways.

Well, I went to school for skin care and makeup artistry. (Esthetics) Spelling..Sorry I am tired today.

I have a license. I graduated. So yes, I would say I am a makeup artist/skin therapist.
BUT, I also know its a "life learning job" You have to keep up with all the trends.
I have not, I can be honest. I have done makeup for runway shows in Madison, Photoshoots and makeup for my friends when they have a big event.

I know that their are WAYYYYYYYYY more talented artists then myself, and I am okay with that because everyone is different. I do not get annoyed because if girls/guys want to say they are makeup artists, then so be it. it doesn't bother me. Its what they like to do.

You shouldnt care either.

Yeah, when I made this post, I was reffering to YT 'Gurus' and also people I know. For the people saying "You shouldn't care what others say or do" you really dont seem to understand that I dont care at all, and most others dont either, it's just annoying to hear people say that they have 'amazing' skills and tons of 'talent' because they can do one look, and switch up the colors. As a 16 year old, I know a lot of these types of people. Also, another thing I forgot to mention, label whores. Lmfao.

Nateeya, you're comment just proves that no body really pays attention to anything people ACTUALLY are saying on here. Once again, I was not talking about true makeup artists, and if you're ACTUALLY a makeup artist, I really don't know who the hell would pay someone that can only do one look.
