I've had two MAC counter experiences (if you can call the second one that). The first one, eight years ago (!), was a good one. The second one, which IIRC was a couple of years ago, was a non-experience, in that I had a looksee around the counter, looking at various products, but was totally ignored.
The 'best' service I had was at a CCO last summer. Great women working there. :)

There are two kinds of MAC employees, freelance makeup artists, and girl's who work at the counter. I have worked in cosmetics for a few years and have noticed that in general most of the girls (at least the ones I worked with) who freelance are rude, and generally the girl's who work at the counter are nicer.

I've actually had pretty good luck with the people at MAC... I have one who seems to recognize me after months of being missing and I've been complimented on my makeup... They're usually so nice [though occasionally way too busy when I really need one]

I'm 16, and when I go into a MAC store they look at me like "Oh, a teenager, she's doesn't know what she's doing, she might break something" and I think it's awful. I'm innocently swatching eyeshadows and a guy rudely says "Are you going to buy any of those?" I just walked out, I haven't been in a store since. They look at me like I haven't got the first clue about makeup, when there are plenty of people in there who look so confused, but because they're older the staff ignore them and make sure the youths aren't trashing the place. Awful.

I live in Australia and the MAC staff here are really friendly. When you work into the store they ask if you need their help and when you look at products, they ask if you want them to put it on you to see if you like it. I go to MAC every three months to get my skin color matched with foundation (skin changes through seasons - oily, dry, more tanned etc) & they're friendly about it.
NYC is busy but here in Australia it doesn't get as hectic a New York. Maybe it's about being under pressure to meet the sales for the day. You should put in a complaint though!

If you go into Manhattan (midtown and below) most likely its busy but more uptown ( more neighborhood less tourist attraction) its not busy. I have to say in the Bronx I have yet to see anyone that looks like they had any authority and in Harlem either. Next time I'm just going to take my butt into the city. It's sad that this is a issue all over...smh

It's because they have sales goals to meet. So if you don't look like you're gonna buy a lot from them they try to avoid you. Sad but true!

I live in NYC ive and when ive went i never had a problem but then again i dont think i even paid attention to them unless i needed something lmao but yeah people in ny can be rude, hey if they ever give you crap you just look at them and tell them do you want my purchase than you should change your customer care!! seriously if we dont say anything they wont change, and no one should make you feel intimidated to not go back or feel uncomfortable.

I live in PA and everyone at my mac counter besides maybe one or two girls are amazing. they basically know me and how i like my makeup by heart and they're always willing to help me. they've let me see products and let me swatch products before they were released. MUA do deal with alot of impatient and rude customers throughout the day too - you have to think of that. by the end of the day maybe they're not in the best mood because a customer either had NOOOO idea what they wanted and drove them insane or they were rude. of course you should always keep calm but they're people too, how many indecisive people can you handle within an 8 or so hour period?

I just have one question. How can you tell if someone wants to buy or not? Is it because they're looking around or because they're not all giddy and in your face? I'm sorry but if you're a sales person you can get someone to purchase one or more items. That tells me you don't want to do your job. A couple of years ago I went into Sephora to learn how to do a smokey eye and came out with 120 bucks worth of make-up. Now that's a sales person! @Sabrina this incident was at 12 noon on a Wednesday. In NYC that's a ghost town. Most people are at work.

The MAC employees at Macy's are usually much nicer than the MAC store employees. I wonder why that is?

I'm not saying that you have to be giddy and in their face to buy something. i'm just saying, instead of accusing them of ALWAYS being rude, which im sure some are but not all, you have to look at it from their perspective too. if someone is coming into your business or for a company you work for and wastes your time using lots of products and maybe even helping them and lost other customers and they don't even buy anything - it gets frustrating.also, a good sales person can make sales, but others come in interested in products and ask questions but don't have the money. a sales woman cannot force someone to buy something, because that comes off as pushy. as for their frustration with other customers, they shouldn't take that out on you that they're frustrated but they're only human. working in retail/sales can be a cuthroat job. you have to make your sales numbers for that month or week and if you don't, you're screwed. i'm not saying all mac women are angels (i have encountered some rude ones) but you can't put all of them in the same category. just like saying "all men are a*holes".

and i don't mean to start arguments, but i've been shopping at mac for years and i've never had that terrible of customer service. if you've had a bad experience, you should take it to a manager, not smack talk on a website that won't do anything to change it. i feel like it's so middle school like.

They get paid to give a good service!!!
If u sent your child to school in a class of 30 and 15 of those children were noisy and the teacher scolded your child... You would be upset too and write a report on the school or teacher for perspective parents. This is all tgis talk is... A sharing of Veiw points.

I agree! Yes they are human, and get irritated... BUT they get paid to give a good service!! So whether the person before was an annoyance or not, that shouldn't be a reason for being rude to the next... And it's not about talking smack on a sight it's just sharing opinions...

I've never had a bad experience with them. I usually go to the MAC counter at Macy's. They have been really helpful. If I have questions and I need help I try not to go when the place is too crowded/busy.

I've only had that experience in one MAC store but I completely understand what you mean! A lot of the workers at this particular store undermined me, and when I asked about certain products, they said only "experienced people" could apply them! I thought they were very rude and belittling towards me as well as other customers.

I live in Cincinnati and There is only one MAC store near me but the service I've gotten is INCREDIBLE! I've never had a bad experience at my counter. They are always super helpful and happy to help. There is that occasional pushy makeup artist that tries to sell you the whole counter but that's understandable. But never have I had a rude artist or anything close to that!

@Kristina, i get that! and thats what i'm saying, you should expect great customer service but they're just like us. i've lost my patience with some people and took it out on people i shouldn't have. it happens. I just don't like the fact that MAC may be getting a bad rep now because of this. i feel sorry for the people who have left a MAC store or counter on a bad note, because i've never had that problem. but i just don't like everyone saying it's everywhere, - it's not. i went to the times square mac and had no problems. they were friendly and were willing to help. people have their bad days and you were just at the wrong place and the wrong time. like i said, working in that business is hard. you're pressured to meet your sales goals and if someones coming in messing around and wasting your time and then leaves without buying something you feel like it was a waste and could've helped another customer that would've bought something.

^^ LOL!! someone is taking this topic to heart. I will say what i want to say about some MAC employees i've dealt with from my experience. NOT all of em' are friendly & helpful. It is also never mandatory for us customers to buy anything REGARDLESS how much time they think is wasted. Too bad if you feel like that! oh well! Customer Service is THEIR JOB! if they feel like they are "wasting time" then find another job, not take it out on customers. I'll post my reviews about them to their face & online regardless.

The MAC store near me is usually rude as hell, they ignore me completely. The Sephora people are always super helpful though, without being like, annoying!

I feel if thats your job doint be rude about people who are looking around bc you know what jobs are hard to come by these days and im sure someone else would be more than glad to take their place..no employee should ever make a customer feel bad about shopping wheather that person annoys you or not its called being professional. you canot let your personal feelings affect your work space.
