Fall is, without a doubt, my favorite time of the year. It has the best holidays (Halloween!), the best wardrobe (sweaters!), the best weather (not too hot, not too cold), and the best seasonal activities (apple picking! Pumpkin carving!). Fall also has my favorite color palette, pulled straight from the hues of the changing leaves: Think burnt orange, rusty red and golden yellow. Luckily for us fall enthusiasts, these classic autumnal colors are easy to translate into your makeup bag. Here are the fall makeup shades I’m most excited to play with this season, plus the products to use to get them.
Terracotta
I love a good burnt orange or terracotta for adding natural-looking warmth to a look—plus, these colors work equally well on eyes, cheeks, and lips, which makes for a perfect monochromatic situation. This year, I’m thinking about investing in Viseart’s Warm Mattes Eyeshadow Palette for its gorgeous range of clay tones. For those who aren’t ready to commit to a palette, I also like the look of the Natasha Denona Blush Duo in 11 Burnt Orange.
Ochre
Muted yellows—ochre, mustard, antique gold, and goldenrod—are another classic fall color that I’m very hyped about. Natasha Denona’s Gold Palette serves up a great selection of metallic golds, as well as what might just be the perfect shade of rich ochre (Dijon 200CM).
Earthy Green
Autumn isn’t all about yellows, oranges and reds. The fall approach to green is muted and earthy, like Spanish moss or a pair of khakis. Stila nailed this color in their line of matte liquid eye shadows. Stila Suede Shade Liquid Eye Shadow in Enchanted Earth is a matte olive green that goes on opaque and stays put for hours. Lately, I’ve been blending it over my lids for an easy, single-shade look that actually lasts through the workday.
Brick Red
Some beauty trends should be left back in the 90s, but a brick red lip isn’t one of them. This fall, I’m planning on scooping up rms beauty Wild With Desire Lipstick in the shade Rapture, which looks like the warm brick red of my dreams. If you prefer a cooler-toned option, try Jouer Cosmetics Long-Wear Lip Crème in Brique, which leans a bit more towards the berry side of the spectrum.
Warm Brown
Maybe it’s just me, but warm, toasted browns seem to scream “cozy.” If your skin tone is medium to deep, you can’t go wrong with Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick in Maude, a rich rosewood brown with a seriously long-lasting matte finish. For lighter skin tones, I recommend VDL Expert Color Lip Cube Fluid Velvet in 201 Maple, which gives you the soft, blotted-lip effect, minus the blotting.
Poppy Red
But wait! There’s more. If you’re scrolling through all of these muted colors and yawning, this one’s for you. When I want a pop of color, a bright poppy red is my seasonal go-to. LINA CHOO’s The Great Artist Velvet Matte Lipstick has been getting rave reviews, and shade 36 Van Gogh is at the top of my wish list—it looks like the perfect bright, orange-based red for fall.
