I've never had any luck with those kinds of sets, especially the lip products, they usually smell/taste gross. It's also really likely that the eyeshadows aren't very pigmented. I'm sure there are some out there that are decent quality though. Since they are usually a good price, if you are really curious you could just try a couple and see what you think. :)

The other problem would be the products having harmful chemicals, but I would have no idea about that.

I find sets beneficial if it's a collection of the brand's "best sellers". Smaller companies aren't known for those, so they can throw anything into a set and tone down the quality of items since its more of an unknown brand.

Great examples of sets I've purchased in the past are:

MUFE holiday train case
Tarte's glow your way to gorgeous set
Sephora summer favorites set
Benefit (the one with hoola bronzer and high beam)

I know for ds brands, Hard Candy has some that are their cult FAVs for affordable alternatives as gifts too! Just research individual product reviews before committing to one.

One I am excited to get it Tarte's lip surgence pencil set. All are full sized for the price of two individual ones! A great set to piece out and give as gifts... They're super hydrating and have beautiful pigmentation.

Stila has a blockbuster holiday set via Costco, but the quality isn't all there compared to their reg shadows, but for $15 or so, it's not bad if variety is more your goal.

No matter how many times I go into the store I ALWAYS stop and look at those sets. I never bought one cause I already know that it's going to be a no no.

My family always buy me those! They're usually by some brand I NEVER see unless it's Holiday season - The Color Workshop. For the past 10 years, they were pretty bad BUT the last one I received [4 years ago] wasn't half bad! It had a baked highlighter, a baked bronzer, blushes & a few eyeshadow pallets. The eyeshadow colors weren't very good unless used wet (with the exception of a few VERY pigmented colors) but the bronzers/highlighter & blushes were great!
I've never worn them out, I only use them to play around & experiment with colors, but last time I checked, they looked to have gotten a lot better. I might just ask for one this year just to see!

The brand is The Color Workshop. At least at my walmart. I got one for christmas, and was so pissed with the eyeshadow! The fallout is incredible! Seriously, how does somebody deal with that? If you can get past the shimmer and huge amount of fallout, they actually do have a really good staying power. They are seriously hard to get off, lol. But that makes the fallout horrible. When I'm trying to get the fallout off, I end up blending it into my skin, lol. I need a fan brush. They're pretty much always going to be shimmery, so that is kind of irritating. The blushes drive me nuts! They don't blend out AT ALL! The lipsticks aren't that bad, but they stain your lips. So, you know, whatever. They are shiny with cute packaging, and it's hard to tell yourself "it's crap quality, it's crap quality!". I forgot to mention, the eyeshadows are killer for wet application and eyeliner. They have super pigmentation and staying power. So, it's your choice. :D

Yeah, it is 50 50. They last a long time as long as you use it for the things that they're good for. If you buy one, they're super fun to mess around with, without feeling guilty about messing around with good quality. Like mac, lets say. I prefer to use my high quality makeup for things that I already know how to do. :P As long as you don't get the color workshop for using it for the things that it sucks at, you'll be fine. I agree with Andrea, they have gotten a tad better. My sister got one last christmas, and the eyeshadows were pretty great. But the blush still irks me to death. Which I don't get because Andrea said she loved hers! lol

The only holiday sets from drugstores I have had good luck with are the Wet n Wild ones and ELF holiday sets *but these can also be hit or miss!*

What I like to do is find smaller sets by better known brands and save that way. I would rather spend a bit more for something I know will perform. But, I guess if your local drugstores take things back--how can you lose??

lol !!! @Sharon, Stephanie, Amanda & Theresa !

I would save my pennies and buy something known for their great quality.

they're made in China. low quality stuff (hence, the low price) and you don't know what they're made of. i'm asian but i won't buy those. i know better.
