So I just read the article here on Beautylish called "A No Tan Summer" and it got me wondering whether you guys prefer being tan or sporting your natural skin color in the summer?

When I was younger, I was in the sun a lot and got rather dark thanks to the type of skin I have... However, as I spend less time outdoors, I've become quite a ghost... and I like it! I especially like brighter colors on my pale skin. That being said, I wear sunscreen and if I tan through that while I am outside, I tan... but I don't go out just to tan and I wouldn't bother with self tanners.

in april i went on vacation to florida and BAKED in the sun... on my cheeks and on my chin i got extremely bad peeling and burn spots, and even to this day those spots on my face are really rough and are STILL healing!! i'm kind of indecisive about going back out into the sun to tan on the beach because i dont want that kind of burn again.

I tan with sun screen! &I keep applying it throughout my stay outside. I'm not a fan of pale.. and I feel like it shows that I don't stay inside all of the time!

I dislike tanning, personally for myself. I rock my natural skin color all the time and if i get some sun on me from being outside in summer then cool whatever, Im not purposely trying but i never really got tan i just burned.
I do sometimes go with my mom to the tanning salon, booth cause its relaxing and the lotion you put on smells good but i havent done that in over a year.
i like my pale skin :)

It's been a tan free summer for me so far... and I'm ok with that! I used to tan all the time until I realized how stupid it was to risk skin cancer and premature aging just to be darker. When I really want a little color I just use the faux stuff.

I grew up watching my Mom go through skin cancer treatments. It's not deadly, but it's not pretty. We both have very fair skin complexions, and when I was way younger, she'd lay out and tan. Then around 10 she went to the dermatologist and was told that she had skin cancer. She's had it since then. My Mother is beautiful, but she has a lot of wrinkles, and depending on where it's acting up and when, her arms, back or legs will be completely covered in these nasty looking sores and scabs where she has to put on this medicine that basically "eats" away the cancer. Like I said, it's just really... Not pretty. It's not worth it. I think pale skin is beautiful. It's also a sign of health, although the world doesn't seem to think that. It really is. Now, I know that being pale, it shows bug bites, veins, bruises, cellulite, etc. a lot easier. So if I'm going out in a swimsuit or something I usually just use some self-tanning lotion and that works perfectly fine.
By the way- You can STILL get a tan while wearing sunscreen! And it's so much better for your skin.

I'm naturally tan so the real danger is for me to get too dark when I'm out and about. It only takes a bit of sun before I have to get new foundation! My Mom is really fair and burns easily so she is constantly battling the sun. Frankly, I think she'd rather not tan. It's a very Asian thing, I suppose. I'm fine with my medium skin but almost everyone's obsessed with being fair here in Asia.

I just like lying in the sun, tan or no tan, i do always wear sunscreen to protect myself but i really like going golden. I am trying to be safe, the thought of cancer terrifies me but i love the feeling of sunbathing

I've never rocked any color other than my natural skin tone because I can't tan! I am very, very fair and when I was younger (middle school/beginning of HS) I tried so hard to get a tan and all I would get is freckles and a sunburn (that would peel instead of turning into a tan - haha).
I hesitate saying this because I don't want to "preach" or push my views on anyone, HOWEVER, my brother frequently visited the tanning bed when he was in college and ended up getting a melanoma (the deadly skin cancer) when he was my age, 21. My mother actually noticed how funny the mole looked when he was home for the summer and had it removed before he went back to school. He was lucky to not have to endure treatment but who knows what could have happened if my mom didn't make sure someone looked at it??
all that being said, I just ask that you all be careful and DO NOT visit the tanning bed! You can wear sunscreen and still achieve a healthy glow without ruining your skin!! just hoping you all will be careful :)

That's so horrible to hear Cassie but it's nice of you to share with all of us so that we know from someone's personal experience of the risks that the sun can do to a person's skin. I personally love being a more fair complexion. I don't call it 'pale,' I like to call it porcelain. Some of the most gorgeous women are lighter skinned (such as Dita Von Teese). More people should appreciate their natural skin tone and enjoy who they are. I am all for self-tanners and wanting to look a different shade if you want to, but I think that lighter complexions are just as gorgeous.

I'm naturally darker and I tan easily so I wear sunscreen and try to stay in the shade. I love the sun, but I have hyper pigmentation on my forehead, which can take ages to fade.

I don't use tanning beds (never have, likely never will), nor do I like to use self-tanners (most of them turn me into an Oompa-Loompa eventually). If I get any colour during the summer, it's directly from the sun.
And yes, I wear sunscreen if my skin's not all covered up. :)

its not like I just go out looking for a tan, but i do go to the ocean so i naturally get tan. I dont really understand this question.

@Taylor H, I don't know how much more straight-forward I can get with the question. Do you like to be tan in the summer or prefer keeping your natural skin color? Maybe try reading the first part of the article and you'll understand what I'm asking? :) Idk lol.

I'm a fishbelly-white girl. I occasionally get a touch of color in the summer, but I'm a big fan of big, wide-brimmed sun hats and lots of sunscreen. Yes- I'm the extra-pale girl in the crowd of tanned bodies... But it sure beats risking skin cancer.
I'm proud I can wear the same color foundation nearly all year long! Sometimes I get a little burn, but it fades quick to a mini-tan, then in days it's gone.

I am naturally so pale that I have problems finding a light enough foundation and have avoided tanning because I love the look. That being said this year I have a job outside for the summer and though I have been using sunscreen I have a bit more colour on my face. :(

For me, it's natural to get a tan in the summer. If I'm outside with skin exposed, I'll get tanned. I guess it's a balance. I refuse to hide from the sun (SPF anyone?) but I don't go out of my way to bake in it either.
Strangely enough, the sun has been pretty comfortable so far this year. I remember years past where you couldn't sit out for 10 minutes before feeling that uncomfortable prickle (even with SPF). I've enjoyed the few afternoons that I've been able to sit outside in the sun.
