I have straight, regular thickness hair that's easy to curl, so what works for me is putting it in braids (depending on how wavy you want it + the thickness of your hair) while it's wet and sleeping in them overnight. My hair holds a curl well so I don't use very many products, but I like to use baby powder in my roots for extra volume (you can also use dry shampoo) and then I like to use a light hold hairspray that's a couple bucks from the brand Aussie. They also have a mega hold hairspray if you find your hair falls flat throughout the day.

I like braids, flexi rods, curl formers, bantu knots and rag curls to curl my hair. My hair never holds a curl either and these ways work for me really well, especially when done from wet and left overnight.

Products wise, I love the John Frieda curl defining spray and Wella volumising mousse (not quite sure why but it holds my hair in styles really well)

I have regular curlers and hot rollers as well. They give me kind of loose, voluminous curls that I like http://newaylook.com/best-beach-waves-hair-ideas/ As for products I don’t use any, except a really good heat defence. But I know Tresemme and lee stafford do really good mousse that you put in your hair before.
However, the curls you get from a straightener are curly from the roots, not just from the mid-point to the end. If you want step by step guide there’s some really good ones on youtube like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpl9KYzmJ6s.
And you don’t need to buy curling irons! you can use your hair straighteners.
Apply a strong hold hairspray AFTER unless you want crunchy curls that will flake and hairspray residue all over your curling irons
