In response to your brush question - it really depends on your budget and how much you're willing to spend. There are cheaper brushes that work equally as good as expensive ones.
I've got a couple of MAC brushes, some from Sephora, some from Coastal Scents, a couple from Ecotools. All of them are pretty decent so far. I like soft, dense brushes that do not shed too much. Perhaps you could try investing in one of those Ecotool brush sets for starters - they are affordable and have all the basics for you to start experimenting with. Hope this helps!
