Bare Nails Are Having a Moment—And It Makes Total Sense

As a beauty editor, I’m always watching for the next big trend—and the latest one might be the most surprising yet: bare nails are having a moment.

From the red carpet to the runway, natural nails are stepping into the spotlight. No elaborate art, no high-shine chrome, no appointment booked three weeks in advance. Just clean, cared-for nails. Simple, yes. But also a little radical.

Some might chalk it up to the state of the world. With inflation, layoffs, and salon prices on the rise, regular upkeep can feel like one of the easiest expenses to cut. And while tough times often bring on the “lipstick effect,” these days that might look more like an at-home polish than a standing salon appointment.

Beyond the financial cost, time spent in a nail salon can feel like an investment in itself. Life has always been busy, but carving out a couple of hours every two weeks feels increasingly hard to justify—especially when you think about what else you could do with that time: see friends, run errands, actually unwind. I don’t know about you, but getting my nails done has started to feel less like a luxury and more like just another chore to cross off my to-do list.

For me, there’s another cost entirely. Whether I go with gel, SNS, or acrylics, my nails usually come out weak and brittle—and it can take weeks, sometimes months, to nurse them back.

Not to mention—nail salons are notoriously heavy on chemicals: harsh solvents, synthetic resins, formaldehyde. The more we learn about what we’re exposing ourselves to, the harder it is to ignore. It’s made a lot of us more intentional about what we put on our bodies, nails included. But the bare nail movement has some options for those of us wishing to repair, renew, and scale back. However you choose to show up, neat and nourished never misses.

Brands like Manucurist are leading a different conversation—one where nail care is actually good for your nails, not just good-looking. Their formulas are designed to strengthen rather than strip, changing the calculus.

S.O.S Nail Mask, a hydrating formula that works at night while you sleep, helps fortify and rebuild, not just recover.

On the days I’m going bare, Active Glow is my go-to for adding a natural tint without any extra effort.

Tweezerman’s Glass Manicure Kit makes a clean-looking bare nail a lot more achievable, giving you a professional-level finish without leaving your house.

But why is the bare nail trend happening?

Maybe it’s a quiet rebellion against unrealistic standards. Polished nails have felt like an unspoken rule—especially if you consider yourself, or want to be perceived as, feminine.

But standards are shifting. Perhaps we’re finally understanding that we get to choose how we spend our time, money, and energy. How we take care of ourselves. How we show up. There’s no longer one cookie-cutter version of “put together”.

There will always be ways to express yourself through style, makeup, hair, and nails. But it’s also okay to opt out, scale back, or find a different avenue altogether. It feels genuinely refreshing to know that the natural route is a valid choice, not a compromise. Your beauty routine doesn’t have to define you. At least, not all the time.
