Did you think that primer was only for your face? Think again. During our last blowout at the Ric Pipino salon (a SoHo staple), we chatted with stylist Donna Wagner about why hair primers are an underrated staple in your hair routine. She said it best: "Think of your hair like your skin. You need to have perfectly smoothed skin for makeup to apply flawlessly—the same principle holds for hair."
Hair primers smooth the follicles, heat-protect, tame the frizz, and even stop UV rays from damaging and drying out your scalp. "With the right primer and the correct application, subsequent styling products will work more effectively during your daily blowout," explains Donna. So what's the secret to perfectly prepped locks? "It's all about layering the right amount of product for your hair style. You have to understand your hair texture, and more importantly, your haircut, to properly tame your mane." On most hair styles, evenly distribute a nickel-size amount of product on damp hair (if you get oily roots, focus the product on the ends). Distribute the product with a wide tooth comb and don't over-apply—too much product weighs down fine or thin hair. Layer styling products as you blow-dry to build up volume and body that will last for the day. With a polished foundation, your tresses are ready to take it to the next level.
