I was approached about Operation Prom by my mom. She’s a huge fan of this time of year, and can’t get enough of the flowing chiffon dresses and glittery makeup looks. She learned about the initiative through her coworker, who was helping assemble the program this year and encouraged me to get involved. Since 2005, Operation Prom has helped thousands of students find new or gently used prom dress for their special day. The organization was searching for makeup artists to volunteer their time, and I was up for the cause. Prom only comes once in a lifetime—how could I not get involved? The turnout this year was amazing—the team managed to source over 3,000 dress donations from local businesses and member donations! But it wasn’t all just for the ladies; OP was able to get donations and discounts for tuxedos too! As an extra treat, 30 young women won a raffle for hair and makeup services. That’s where I came in.

I was fortunate to meet and make up high school senior Melaika. She requested a smoky pink eye to match the vibrancy and energy of her gown. Her features were a treat to work with—defined almond eyes, a gorgeous bronze complexion, and adorable freckles to boot! “I feel very thankful and happy to be involved with Operation Prom because it’s so expensive to be a senior,” expressed Melaika as I perfected her look. If she could have any beauty splurge, Melaika pointed out that she’d love to have extensions to give her more volume and create a dramatic hairstyle. With a little eye shadow, a pair of standout false lashes, and lip gloss, I managed to help this bright young girl celebrate one closing chapter of her life, and the start of something new.
