Writing out labels for the Beautylish Get One, Give One Lucky Bags with donor namesIn January 2019, we brought the Japanese New Year custom of fukubukuro to Beautylish—but with an altruistic twist. The Beautylish Get One, Give One Lucky Bags were filled with a surprise combination of makeup and skincare. For every bag purchased, one bag was donated to the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in San Francisco.

With the help of our customers, we were able to donate a total of 200 Lucky Bags. While Lucky Bag season has passed, these gifts continue to positively impact hundreds of patients and their parents.

“The whole team [at Benioff Children’s Hospital] was just so excited when we got the bags in because we knew the products were going to be perfect for our teens and parents,” said Amanda McGee, Volunteer and Community Liaison for Child Life Services Department at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital.

“When people think of a children’s hospital, they maybe think of a younger child. But sometimes people forget that we have a pretty large teen and parent population here at the hospital that needs just as much support,” said Amanda.

This past Valentine’s Day, Lucky Bags were distributed to parents as a token of appreciation for their love and strength during their child’s hospitalization. “A lot of the focus here in the hospital is on the child, and when parents realize that a gift is for them, I think they’re always so shocked and really humbled that people are thinking of them too throughout this journey,” said Amanda.

Beautylish Lucky Bags continue to be distributed through different hospital events, including the annual patient-wide prom. Current patients, as well as those admitted in the last year, are invited to participate in a night of fun that traditionally serves as a teenage rite of passage. This year, attendees will have the opportunity to prep their skin, hair, and makeup for the prom with the contents of their Lucky Bags.

For patients, the gift of Lucky Bags translated into an overwhelming amount of support in their fight toward recovery. “Anytime we’re able to take the focus off of the medical condition that the child or teen is facing, it really does bring a ton of joy,” said Amanda, “Through a gift, like the beauty bags, we’re really able to pay attention to the patient’s mental wellbeing, which ultimately makes them stronger.”

We’re thrilled that the Get One, Give One Lucky Bags brought happiness to patients and their families and continues to spread cheer. We’re especially thankful to all of our customers who purchased a Get One, Give One Lucky Bag—we couldn’t have done it without you.
