I know its sooo unhealthy and all that stuff so you guys don't need to educate me on it, I already am lol. If I burn from tanning in the sun, will I still burn in the tanning bed? My skin is light (ivory colored almost). Any tips to give me?

There are the high pressure kinds that are made so they don't burn you. Also, I suggest starting with a short time and wear spf anyway.

Well I guess it's your problem if you want to get skin cancer...

If you burn in the sun, you will most definitely burn in a bed. If you have a hard time tanning outside, you will also have that problem in a bed. You're better off using self tanners, as those with ivory skin will not only have difficulties getting color, but are at risk of receiving more damage than those with darker skin.

And while it may seem desirable to have darker skin, think of the risks. Many people who tan frequently often say they wish they could take back all of the damage it's caused. Tanning can also become very addictive. I know you're thinking that you won't get skin cancer, no one ever thinks they'll be the one to get it, but why take the risk? You can get a nice tan from self tanners and you save yourself the regret.

Honey, I have been sick since the day I was born. I am white. Almost transparent. I use a self tanner, and it works very well. I can use it on any part of my body. Also, tanning is hard on you. In a few years you will wrinkle and have dark spots. Potentially getting skin cancer. Melanoma is pretty hard core. Honestly, I know that glow is so desirable, but allow your natural beauty to shine. Make sure to drink plenty of water and baby oil is the best lotion, I learned with my pregnancy. Be safe and smart.

Talk to the girl at the front desk. I don't burn but my friend who goes with me does and they were very well educated on her skin & the best bed and time to start with. Almost everything now days supposedly gives you cancer. Can you get skin cancer from tanning too much? yes. can you die from drinking too much? yes that doesn't mean one drink will shut your body down & kill you. go to a salon with good beds & tan in moderation if thats what YOU want to do. its nobody elses business. to answer your question it is possible you could burn but just take prior precautions & if you feel like you may be burning then get out early and remember that time for the next time you go & do that amount of time. hope this helped.

I'm not a fan of shaming those who choose to self tan and are educated on the risks involved. Please, simply enjoy your legal, personal liberties and let others enjoy theirs with equal fervor. :)

Please don't be misinformed. Tanning, even in moderation, can in fact cause skin cancer. Regardless of how often you tan, you are at the risk of cancer.

I don't want to shame you, it's just I see so many people who regret tanning because of all the damage it does.

I'm with you Claire in regard to the dangers and side effects. I just felt some commentary was unnecessary. Knowledge is imperative when taking any risk. I personally don't tan and use high SPF and occasionally self-tanner. I try to avoid wrinkles at all costs and my friends long gave me a hard time about it. Now...not so much..lol

Out here in vegas at BodyHeat Tanning they have FGT (filter glass tanning) and instead of burning rays the bed gives off bronzing rays. best bed I've been in by far. and I'm a super whitie!

Yes you can still burn in the bed! Depending on how long you're in for and how strong the bulbs are. I know at my old salon, they had newer bulbs which were stronger and then older bulbs which weren't as strong and they out the beginners in those beds as they were starting to build up their tan to prevent them from burning. And I agree with everything Sarah N. said perfectly. To each their own ya know!

If I had a damn penny for every person that said you're getting skin cancer if you tan. again, she didn't ask anyone for a skin cancer warning, in general when you step out of your house in the sun you are in danger of getting skin cancer. you can get skin cancer from different types of ways.
and depending on the melanin you produce, depends on the way your skin reacts to the UV in the tanning beds/booths. if the tanning consultant is educated enough, they will provide you and recommend you with the best options and timing for your session.
definitely agree with sarah if you tan in moderation it's definitely different than tanning every single day at different salons. it's just like water, water is good for you, but what happens if you drink 10 gallons in one day?...nothing good.
also, i definitely recommend using a vertical tanning booth instead of a lay down bed, vertical booths are far more sanitary.
as long as you are educated on the pros and cons of tanning and your skin you can do whatever you'd like.

There's no need to be mean, my intentions are good. I just feel like many teens are misinformed about how dangerous tanning is. Cancer isn't something to risk.

Yes Is Very Possible That You Might Burn 😔 Also I Know A Woman That Went Tanning Literally Everyday For Years. Guess What? No Cancer! Now My Aunt On The Other Hand Would Always Protect Her Self From The Sun Everytime She Went Out , She Was Recently Diagnosed With Skin Cancer. So There Are Many Other Risks Of Getting Cancer Even Without Going Into A Tanning Bed.

I tan a lot and I promise you you won't burn if you start tanning for 10 min, then the next time 13 min, and be careful to not tan for too long the first times!

You really can't compare drinking too much water to too much tanning...just use self tanners. you get color payoff without risking cancer and premature wrinkles. remember, the best anti aging product is sunscreen. :)

I'm fully in support of education regarding skin care and health. My initial comment was not aimed at any specific post, but rather an overall observation of the climate these threads often bring. I'm as disappointed by those who dismiss risk involved as I am by those who would shame tanners. I hope Kaitlyn, you got the information you were seeking. This is always a hot button issue in the forum with strong views on both sides. Me? I'll be in the shade with a big ole' floppy hat and snazzy sunglasses. ;)
