I was talking about this earlier with a friend and was wondering what you guys thought. If your beauty was suddenly stripped away, if you woke up tomorrow morning with no hair and half of your face and body covered in burns, or something along those lines, how would you live your life differently? How much of your daily happiness depends on how you look? How much hope do you put in your appearance?

A lot if I don't think I look good I don't feel good!:/

This just made me think... I guess I'm superficial because I definitely wouldn't feel as pretty. Like if I'm having a bad day... I don't put on makeup... Therefore symbolizing my emotions that day... Look like crap, feel like crap right?

I don't think that makes you superficial Miss C....Just human! I think we've all gotten used to living in a world where, thanks to the influence of the media, our appearance affects our quality of life. When my friend asked me this question, I realized I have some things I want to change. Tomorrow promises nothing, and I want to know that I am putting my hope and energy into things that are more worthwhile.

Sometimes I contemplate this as well. Honestly, it would be devastating to me, not that I think I'm super attractive to begin with. However, I agree with the other women, looking good is really instrumental to feeling good.

Last month my hair started falling out just overnight. My hair was immediately just went from beautiful and shiny to thinning and dead looking. I was diagnosed with Telogen Effluvium a temporary hair loss disorder which in my case was due to a bad reaction to the flu vaccine. The doctor said it should stop in about 4 months and all my hair will grow back. But I have been so depressed about it. I never thought anything would attack my looks. To be honest I depend on my looks a lot. I depended on being a girl and being pretty to get what I wanted in a lot of ways. I was slightly arrogant before this happened. I thought my hair was just so wonderful. It's been a humbling experience. I'm learning to deal with it and I think it has opened my eyes and changed my life.

Oh and I heard Kim K has telogen effluvium also as a result of childbirth so that made me feel a little better too :) lol.

Well that's almost like my mom she's not burned but was in a way deformed by ger failed transplant. And she is the living proof that there is more to life then beauty and you can sit in front of the mirror and cry about what happen you have to get up and find away to live happy and try new things. But a honest answer would be I would be devastated at first but I would probably to something like paint or something expensive to get all the pain away and live my life.

Some of the stuff you mentioned...hair loss and burns...I experienced from medical treatments I had in the past. I must say that after my last go around I really learned to love my flaws on my exterior instead of holding my head down in shame. Does my daily happiness depend on what is looking back at me in the mirror? Nope. I'm just glad I overcame the medical battles I faced. That's my happiness right there. Don't get me wrong I love making myself look pretty everyday but it doesn't make me who I am. It doesn't define me.

In all honesty, I'd still be thanking God that I was still alive. There's more to life than looks. Not saying they're not important-we all want to be attractive, but there's more to life than a pretty face. Some of the prettiest people I know have the ugliest attitude and some of the ugliest people I know have the most beautiful attitudes. So while being bald, burned, or unattractive isn't idealistic, it beats being deceased!!

I think I would be upset too. As confident as I seem, I still have bouts of low self-esteem. However, as far as makeup goes, I go without more than I wear it. I'm used to my face and like it without makeup. So, if I couldn't wear makeup I think I might be OK in time. I am an artist and that's something that I focus a lot on and spend a lot of time on, so I think as long as I can make art/art objects I would still feel purpose, that my life is worth living.

I think it would bother any person because to some degree we all care about apperances otherwise everyone would walk around in old clothes, no makeup and with their hair undone. beauty is important to us as humans both inside and out and that does make us vain or superficial

To be completely honest with you, I would probably feel really bad. The most enjoyable thing about being a girl is pampering yourself, getting our hair done, getting all glammed up for the night. Can you imagine living the rest of your life not being able to ever enjoy that? As silly as it seems. It's not so much that I won't look attractive anymore, it's the fact that I wouldn't be able to enjoy those stupid girly things.
Everyone surrounding you will be doing it, and they won't think at all that it would sadden me to not be able to do these things anymore.
It's like my neighbor, she unfortunately suffered a brain infection. And she was not able to do normal everyday things. She couldn't do simple things like remembering her own childrens name, she wouldnt even know which one was her house. Sometimes I would find her outside fuming because she wasn't able to do little things, cook, clean, not even READ. She was literally dependant in order to live. It would really suck if we couldn't do these simple things, anymore.
@Veronica I cannot believe that was a reaction to a vaccine, my mom took me to get a whole bunch and I just about had all kinds of tantrums... lol.

Be down for a bit. then slap a wig on with a meeeeeeaaaan side swoop bang and STILL make my face because makeup is fun. can't let my outward appearance define who I am or get me down for too long. besides the people who love and support you are there for you because of who you are, not what you look like.

I think of this often as I have some health challenges that are changing my body..
honestly it would hurt.. It does hurt when your body starts to fail you and things keep changing..
so often I wish that the world was not so superficial.. I see the damages it does to the young girls in the industry and around the world.
it bothers me that beauty is placed on looks..
some days I wish I was uglier so that I'd blend in more. it is near impossible to be invisible for me (I am not boasting) honestly I have screamed at people (when I've had really bad days on set when I was younger)
I cannot help they looks I was born with - to me, I'm plain Jane..
and I pick myself apart just like any other girl. I was treated just as badly being the pretty girl as most ugly girls.. maybe more in some cases.. Good topic Lizzy! keep your head on your shoulders.. you will go far. blessings.

Hmm this questions makes me think. I would be really sad but thankful to still be alive. There's so many people that go thru this. There's kids with cancer and no hair, so why can't I endure it? I know I would feel bad about myself but I know my personality would shine thru. :)

I feel like I am going through something like this currently, although not so severe. I am on high dose epilepsy medicine for my insane chronic migraines and I gained weight literally overnight. I gained 60 lbs so.incredibly quickly, had to story modeling (my income) and become more comfortable in my temporary skin. I hate to.think I am so vain to think my looks are so important, but to me, they were. I was socialized to think like that. now, I have accepted myself more...although I struggle daily with what seems like the opposite of me 6 months ago, and I have found other parts I love about me. I have realized my true intelligence and channeled my frustration into positivity with volunteering.

I think I might be in the minority in this, but I think that after the initial shock I would actually be totally okay with it. I mean, my three biggest beauty battles every day are my hair, my eyebrows, and my skin issues. In the hypothetical situation, none of those are an issue anymore. That's kind of weirdly cathartic, actually.
