For severe Acne the dermatologist is your best bet hun ,and you have to be consistent and stick with it ,sometimes drugstore or even higher quality products don't work and a dermatologist can walk you through other alternatives.

Hun a dermatologist office offers a lot more than just pills I'm a estheticain and I have been working with problematic skin for years going twice to the dermatologist is not considered sticking with it ,if you have tried everything else as you have said then just going from product to product won't do anything but irritate your skin and leave you with hyperpigmentation that will take a lot of time and money to clear up,dermatologist offers blue light, retin A ,laser, and a host of other treatments you can't do at home ,I can give you a at home routine if you tell me what you have been using and what didn't work to see if that helps but acne has a lot of other factors than just using topicals to clear it

I've suffered with horrible acne for the past 9 years, tried antibiotics both oral and topical, didn't work, tried harsh prescriptive creams, didn't work, and found my skin is a lot better and calmer since I switched to natural ingredient products last year and avoided chemical nasties like sulfates, fragrance/parfum, parabens etc. check out the 'skin deep' database and brands like Dr Organics and Pure Nuff Stuff website (I'm from the UK). Also I found taking the contraceptive pill 'dianette' (also known as co-cyprindiol) helped a lot because it was specially formed to help acne skin. Also diluted tea tree oil directly on the spots and a facial steam with tea tree oil twice a week. I also found switching my make up to bare minerals really helped too! I've suffered for many years and all these things have helped dramatically, but I've found I've had to stick at things to really get results and have done a lot of trial and error! Hope some of this helps, hate to think of someone going through the confidence crushing times like I have over the years x

This is my personal story. I have quite severe acne and have been to the doctors and basically tried everything and it all didnt work. I am 22 and I use the La Roche Posay effaclar line. I don't know if its harder to get abroad. people with severe acne get it funded here as it is support by healthcare and approved by doctors. it didnt remove all of my acne but really makes it a lot less and almost invisible.

I have had pretty bad genetic acne consistently from age 12. I'm now 22 and finally got it under control with the help of a dermatologist and prescription medicines. I think it's kind of unfair to write off all dermatologists because someone hasn't found a combination of things that work for them. I will admit that I am lucky in the fact that I saw very good results with the medicines I was put on the first time around. Today I actually am not wearing any face makeup to work and I honestly never thought I would see a day where I felt comfortable with absolutely no makeup on. I think you should definitely give the dermatologist a second try and stick with what they give you. My derm said she usually doesn't treat anyone unless she is able to see them for over a course of 6 months. So it can take up to that long to see results and for them to know what's going on and adjust things as needed. Also, don't be afraid to contact them and ask questions. If you feel like something isn't working tell them and they may be able to give you something different or tell you to switch something. Communication is key, they can't help if you don't tell them what's going on. But I will say that if your derm is not helpful and not being receptive of your thoughts and needs then you should absolutely switch to a different one. And if you are prescribed pills and they aren't working on their own try asking for a topical cream at the same time. I walked out of my first appointment with 3 prescriptions. It was a little daunting but I figured I had nothing to lose and they ended up helping greatly. So please don't write them off, not every doctor is good but there ARE good ones out there that will try to help you. You do have to give it time though, sadly that's usually the nature of acne. It's a very stubborn disease and it actually isn't fully understood still.

I agree with traci n Caitlin - not every dermatologist is great but that is with any professional field - some are just more passionate than others while some only care about the bottom line making money - so once you find a good dermatologist then stick with them - make sure you are open n honest with your derm n be proactive about your skin care - if you find their methods are not working then let them know - but they will be your best bet in dealing with severe cases since they have been professionally trained to help your skin improve as well as traci said they have a number of tools at their disposal that you won't have access to alone - now that does not mean it's impossible to find a regiment that works for you on your own because you definitely can - but as traci mentioned it could do more harm than good just trying out random products - and what works for one person may not necessarily work for you - which is why the dermatologist is your best bet - they can better tailor a regiment for you than you can because they are the experts - now me personally I always had mild acne until I started experimenting with face makeup n realized that certain synthetic ingredients were irritating the hell out of my face so I delt with that by staying away from harsh synthetic chemicals n preservatives in all my makeup n skin care products and it has helped my acne tremendously to the point where I only get that occasional stress or monthly period pimple or two - but I still have scars from the cystic acne I got previously - so I'm doing what traci suggested to me using vitamin c paired with an exfoliator n it's working great - so I really take everything this woman says to heart she really knows what she is talking about so if I were you I would listen to the skin care guru ;)

@Morena, I'm sorry you had a bad experience like that. On the other hand, generalizing might not be the best way to go. I've known lousy dermatologists and I've known amazing ones.
The thing is, that without professional help, you might end up making your problem worse.

Give the doc a chance. If you do t like him/her then go to another. But do not make experiments on your face.

Just a thought but You could try going to a gynecologist if the acne appears on your forehead and chin only. If youre irregular with periods ,the hormones are the ones causing the acne.

In defense of dermo's since I have a few in family...I've met some that have no business with the title and some who are truly in it to help others. Diana, Caitlin and Traci offer the best advice on how to proceed with a treatment plan. Even after seeing a dermo definitely connect with a skin professional like Traci who spends more time treating skin hands on than a dermo. And please do not rely on your gyno for skin care advice because their training in that field is pretty much nil while a dermo actually does residency in a dermo setting. They can often misdiagnois a skin condition and then have you take unnecessary meds. Caitlin is also spot on with advice. Don't become discouraged beautiful. I too even faced awful skin issues at one time and it took a whole lot of research and making changes on my end to see serious changes. If many of us saw a complete turn around with our skin so can you. ;)
