I've been considering getting one but I hear off brands aren't great and the original beauty blender is pretty expensive for a sponge. Is it really worth the hype? Is it sanitary? How difficult is cleaning if?

I got one from Ross and it is a fantastic makeup tool for me.

I personally don't understand the hype. I tried it many different ways and with different foundations but I didn't like the way it made my foundation look. Now I do like it for contouring but I wish I wouldn't have wasted the money on it. I just have better luck with brushes. I just feel like it was the same as other sponges I have tried so maybe sponges aren't my thing. I did have trouble cleaning it too without their special cleaner so that was annoying too. As far as sanitary goes, it was pretty equal to a brush, you still need to wash it just like you would any other tool.

I've heard of a dupe available at Ross and tj Maxx for like four dollars. It's gotten great reviews.

It's just a sponge, you can get them at the dollar store.. I wouldn't pay 20$ for a sponge!

I found it worked really well for me! I have very dry skin because of my acne medication and so can't really use foundation brushes any more
It you have dry skin I definitely recommend it, but If brushes give you a great finish you're fine without one

I like the real techniques sponge just as much. Plus it's only around $6-8

I agree with Gabrielle, its nothing like the cheap sponges. I love my beauty blender. Its not my only favorite but I definitely think it is worth it.

The only difference between the beauty blender and other sponges is that it doesn't absorb much product, the closest dupe to it I think would be the real techniques sponge.

The real techniques sponge is almost impossible to clean! Maybe bc I kept the foundation in too long? I don't know if that even makes sense! I personally love using a sponge it gives you a whole new flawless look that, I believe, a brush doesn't. Well at least my brushes don't!
Anyway, the real technique sponge works wonders, but I'm really sanitary and the fact that the pigmentation or whatever from the sponge doesn't come off bothers me A LOT.
I might just buy the beauty blender with the cleanser that comes with it because of how much it irritates me!

I have a knockoff and love it. I personally would not buy the real one since it is just a sponge.I could justify buying expensive things if they are like brushes which will last me years. Not a $20 sponge which needs to be replaced every 6 months.

The Real Techniques dupe is only $6 and it literally works the exact same:)

I got one for 3 dollars and it works awesomely, I'm not going to spend $20 on a sponge!

You either like it or love it. For foundation I believe if your a more critical artist who needs it more for perfection and you pay attention to all aspects like finish and everything then go ahead and try it but for an everyday use just use a brush. I personally love it since you tend to use less foundation.

I have a different blender , they work amazingly and leave a flawless finish , perhaps you could still purchase one but a cheaper alternative?

I have one I got in Penneys for 1 euro 50. It's nice enough. I only use it for my powder really though, I wasn't a fan for foundation. I use medium coverage foundations but I felt like it made them way too sheer. I do use it if I think my concealers too heavy to blend it more.
For what I use mine for now I would never pay 20 dollars (14 euro) for one. It would be a waste of money for me.

I agree, there are tons of other dupes out there. For foundation I just prefer to use a brush. However, I do like blending out my concealer especially if I do contouring and highlighting. There are tons of dupes out there.

I also find it sheers out certain foundations I use

Not worth the hype. I use a dupe from Superdrug and it's just as good, plus it has a brush end too.

I bought a dupe first a like the shape and then I saved enough money to buy one. The only thing that makes it special is the shape which other companies have basically duplicated. In the end it's just a sponge. It works like any other sponge but you can get into corners more easily. However, dupes for $5-$8 have the same shape. Totally not worth the hype or the outrageous price!

I got mine at marshalls for 5 bucks and it works the same as the regular beauty blender just that its $20 only difference :)
