Hey guys!
I'm thinking of attempting to start freelancing, however I have no idea how to go about it. I'm a student right now so it'd be pretty small scale, but I love working in makeup so much I still want to.
Do you guys have any advice on how to get started? How much to charge, those kinds of things?
I looked at some of the older forums on it, but I just wanted to know what newer ideas might be.
Let me know! Thank you so much,
<3 B

It's so true, experience is sooo important in everything these days. I obviously don't have a license either, but especially around where I am, I don't think many people do. I'm in a small college town in Oregon, thus the makeup industry isn't exactly booming. But you were very helpful! Thank you so much! I'm starting to put together a portfolio too, 'cause I've had to in other aspects of my life. I just need to find people to link up to now haha
Thank youuuu!

the best thing to do is like Francesca said, is to just do some fun looks on all your friends and family. let them help you get your name out, and when they do you can charge them whatever you feel is neccsary. start a portfolio with a lot of different looks. maybe do some looks starting from something very simple like a winged out eyeliner, to something super dramatic. it allows people(potential clients) to see that your capable of doing a variety of different looks.

Hey Becky! I do freelance myself and the best advice I can give you when you start off is build a strong book. A good attitude is also key in this industry.

I got started quickly by working with a model from modelmayhem.com- she then talked to a boutique owner who was looking for a MUA for a fashion show, so I did that..I didn't charge anything bc it was my first time doing something like that but it was a great opportunity for me. I worked on 14 girls that night who all actively model..which means 14 people added me on facebook, with me tagged in their photos, which then caused me to get lots of friend request from their model friends, then some photographers. I have been making $40 per look at photoshoots and most shoots are 2-3 looks...hope this helps :)
