You need to do what you want. You are an adult and can make your own decisions. What is going on with college though? Are you taking beauty classes? What do they mean qualifications, like a degree? I am a little confused as to why you are hating college?

I'd say stick with it a little longer! You never know what my happen! This will always look good in the future on a resume!

I'm sorry you're not enjoying yourself and that you are in a catty environment right now Andrew. Is it because of the cattiness that you aren't enjoying yourself? I know the feeling of not liking school. I received my Bachelor of Business Administration and the last two years was terribly painful.

I had a blast at my makeup program...thee most fun program I have ever been in. One of the major benefits of taking a makeup program for me was to practice applying makeup on other people. Even though I didn't agree with one or two things that the instructors taught, I practiced what they taught because it never hurts to try to new methods. Plus they have been in the industry for many years so I respected them a great deal.

That's amazing that your makeup school is free, I wish mine was!! Many programs are subsidized in Canada, but not makeup or hair school.

Have you thought about any other makeup programs? Maybe somewhere else?

We also had drawing and painting classes, which I loved because they are the foundations for art. Drawing helped me visualize Painting classes especially helped for mixing skin tones with airbrush paints for fantasy and FX.

That is a long time before you can really start practicing. They didn't show the curriculum before you applied? How long is the program?

Higher education is FREE in Scotland? On one hand you need to just suck it up and realize how fortunate you are to be able to get a degree for free. There are tons of people in other countries who can't afford to get an education or end up racking up large amounts of debt to do so. And you can get one for free, but you want to throw that opportunity away. (which is a really stupid decision in my honest opinion haha) Having that education will put you one step above the rest. Like think of it this way... a client is trying to decide between two diff makeup artists, they both are equally good at what they do, but one has an education and the other doesn't. Who do you think the client will end up picking? Exxxxactly. But on the other hand, you just need to do what makes you happy.

I had a girl come to school here in Hawaii, because her country paid for it... ALL OF IT! But I think she was from Greenland. I was like "WOW", I wish America had something like that.

I definitely get what you're saying...my situation involved a design course (not makeup) where I was supposed to be learning "multimedia design", but it was basically an intro to photoshop class where everyone else didn't even know how to work the program yet. We were literally like making those photo collages that I used to make when I was 13, and I was so frustrated. haha. My suggestion, though, would be to stick it out for a little longer at least. Especially because its free. Its only the beginning of the program, so it might get better later on and there will probably be more room for individuality once you reach higher levels in the program. Right now they are probably still catering to people who don't know the first thing about anything. And like Erica said, just getting those qualifications (no matter how annoying getting them may be) would probably be good for picking up clients. Of course, if it continues to be horrible with no signs of it improving, then finding a different program might be the best route to take.

Follow your heart. Even if your education is currently free right now what's the point of going if you aren't content and you can't be yourself? I consider that the worst form of punishment. I recently changed my college major from Business Admin to Sociology w/minor in English because I was miserable. I realized during an Human Resources class that there was no stinking way that I ever wanted to work for a Fortune 500 company. I had a high GPA as business major but I didn't see the value in high grades if I wasn't happy. Since the change I'm so happy that school doesn't even seem like a chore anymore. I'm all about happiness.

I feel for you, and I have watched over the past few weeks as you have voiced your frustration. So glad it was free, can you imagine how mad you would be if you had paid??

Does having this help, as in looking good on a resume? I guess its time to just weigh out the pros and cons and figure out what's right for you. I saw on the Model Mayhem thread that you are already a professional, so it sounds like it may not change things much for you? I know the parent thing can be a concern, but if you are already a working makeup artist then in no time they will move on from it.

Best of luck with it,
