Keeping track of lipstick to avoid duplicates

I've spend the last couple of weeks organizing my makeup - and I came to the horrifying realization that I have duplicates (sometimes 3 or 4) of most of my lipsticks. If you don't have a case just for lipstick I highly recommended the lipstick organizer by Sharodan btw.

I tend to get into a zone with colors and will buy anything that fits into the zone (Nudes for example)

Some I've picked up duplicates on purpose - Chanel for example can be counted on to discontinue every shade of lipstick that I fall in love with so I always by 2. Mac's Dark Deeds is another one that I've purchased several tubes of.

So, how do you keep track of what you have on hand? I am a nerd so I'm thinking that creating a spreadsheet I can keep on my phone to review before I make my purchase... that seems a bit over-engineered and well geeky.

For lipsticks, you should get a lipstick holder, and if you don't want to spend money on one, try PurseBuzz(via youtube) DIY Lipstick holder.

Honestly keeping track of we already have is very challenging.
Proper organization is the key. Personally I try to rotate & rearrange my makeup setup as often as possible, so i see what i own already.

Creating a spreadsheet is cool if you think that would help you ;) I keep a journal of what i have and what i need, I am a big note taker ( on paper & electronic ) so taking notes is fun for me. ;)

I keep a list on my phone and have two seperate lists:

1.) To buy
2;) Purchased

I make sure I double check my new item before purchasing.  =D

It's funny because I do exactly what Soma does also. I have a list on my phone of what I need/want so I don't buy something I already have at home. Busting out the iPhone list is the new way to shop lol.

The spreadsheet appears to be the way to - I'm building a small program that will allow me to enter all my makeup with a swatch/photo to keep track of what works/doesn't and what I have on hand.

Then I'll print it out into a little booklet and carry that. with me. I'll post when I have the program done if anyone would like to use it as well.
