Other than make-up, don't forget sanitation products and make-up clean-up swabs like cotton swabs (:

I would like to stress also for beginning make-up artist, to get basics and make-up that allows for you to change it up quickly. Don't invest in too many things to begin, as you will constantly (at least every 3-6 months) will have to change out some products and replace. Always keep YOUR makeup separate and keep your work makeup as organized and as sanitary as possible! YOUR CLIENTS WILL APPRECIATE and in turn, rebook or refer you! You will build up, so don't get frustrated if at first you don't have a traincase like most MUA's you see on YOUTUBE...On that note! I am now very inspired to do a "What's in my train case" video, keep a look-out! Good Luck with everything!

On Petrilude's blog he has a humongous list of different makeup, brushes, and other tools that he would recommend for a free-lance makeup artist. I thought it would be really helpful for any kind of beginner MUA.

My fav resource is www.inmykit.com for kit supplies. I always cross-reference my selections with reviews from makeup alley or beautypedia. Hope that helps!

When I started out I couldn't get any pro discounts without proof of work, but I couldn't work without makeup. I saved money by buying great products that weren't too expensive. I still use these products today:
Cinema Secrets Ultimate Foundation
RCMA No Color Loose Powder (it works on all skin tones!)
Eve Pearl Salmon concealer (this is expensive but the website often has HUGE discounts, I think I got this on black friday sale)
La Femme blush palette (one pan is $2.50 at makeupmania.com If you can't decide on colors there is great ready-made palette on camerareadycosmetics.com)
Sleek Makeup Contour palettes (you have to order these from the UK)
NYX matte lipstick, Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick, Revlon matte Lipstick, Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick (I cut these up and put them in a japonesque palette to hide the brands, but they perform wonderfully!)
L'oreal Voluminous and Voluminous Full Definition Mascara
CInema Secrets Brush Cleaner
Beauty So Clean Cosmetic Sanitizer
Sigma and Royal & Langnickel brushes
Cinema Secrets Face Primer
Purchasing things at IMATS is a great way to save money!
