Cleanse, exfoliate (optional), tone, masque (optional), hydrate, protect.
The thing with toners is that theyr'e not all "toners"
There are astringents which have the highest alcohol content and are very drying and for the worse-case acneac skins.
Toners are next, second highest alc content, for acneac and oily
Then there are fresheners..which is what everyone else should always be using, have the lowest (besides whats next) alc content but still control oil secretion and tighten pores without dehydrating.
Now the best thing to use is a thermal spray which is for all skin types and conditions.. its hydrating, purifying, soothing and balances the pH which is what the toner is meant to do.
A 'toner' or which ever you would use should be in the everyday skin care routine due to the fact that the cleanser and moisturizer have separate pH levels and will leave your skin in the wrong spot causing it to go into a frenzy.

??? Mkay, a Toner is a ph balancer point, blank, period. Science 101 here. Your skin is naturally acidic to protect it from bacteria and sun damanging rays. Once you wet your face with water be it from cleansing, scrubbing, removing a mask, or swimming in the pool your skin transfers into a alkaline state. While in this state it is prone to bacteria. So following any type of water you want to tone your skin...bring the PH back to an acidic state...especially if you suffer from acne. There is a difference between toners and astringents - both balance your ph but astringents are alcohol based and can dry out already dry skin. You can pay a pretty penny for toners but what you are paying for is the added ingredients that help the skin in other ways. For example, I have a toner with 10% glycolic acid in it to help with acne and aging and it's $40 dollars a bottle. The cheepest toner on the market runs about .99 cent and can be found in most everyones home - it is witch hazel. All toner and astringents have an abundance of witch hazel in them because it is the gentlest ph balancers available. So, I hope this information helps.

i'm just saying about the different levels and how theyre labelled on a bottle. if you buy one that says toner it will be that second level where as if you buy a thermal spray it will just say thermal spray not thermal spray toner even though they all can be used to do the same thing.

Clinique has a great toner and I use it after I cleansed my face and my pores have been steamed open to removed any extra impurities!

the purpose of a toner is to restore ph balance to the skin, but keep in mind that a lot of face washes have built in toners. Purity from philosphy for example is an all in one face wash, so there is no need to apply a toner after =]
