Contouring is simply meant to enhance your features so you want to contour the hollows of your cheeks (under the cheek bones), the sides of your nose (to narrow it), around your hairline, the edges of your jaw, etc. Then when you highlight your cheek bones, bridge of your nose, etc. (anywhere the light naturally hits) it gives your features a defined, graceful appearance. Faces differ and someone may have a narrow nose to begin with or super hollow cheeks, so you wanna play around with minimizing exaggerated features and playing up the ones that get a bit lost. Practice is the best way. Also, you may wanna check out some Kevyn Aucoin books. Making Faces is a good one in my opinion. As far as products, I have an olive complexion so I like Benefit Moon Beam for highlighting and I used a Too Faced bronzer to contour or I airbrush in some of the contours. Depends!

That Kevyn Aucoin -- Making Faces book is definitely a book worth getting. I got mine from Barnes N Noble for about 30$ and have seen much improvement in my makeup skill/routine. If it helped someone like me that is not a makeup artist it can help anybody! Really great book!

@LeeAnn Right? I found it help med improve some of my techniques for sure. The contouring diagram is fabulous, too!

I love Making Faces by Kevyn Aucoin but in the diagram his sister has a very natural oval face shape. Different face shapes require different contouring depending upon the areas you want to deminish (or recede) and the ones you want to highlight (or bring forward). No joke, my biggest help was having a brother who did drag and always needed me to do his makeup...I had to learn and quick. Any time a person ask me how to highlight & contour (they go hand and hand...can't do one without the other) I tell them to go get a gay guy friend who likes to get made up like a women and have him teach you everything he knows...or watch some guys on youtube doing drag makeup which ever's easier for you.

P.S. cant give you a product list because it also depends on the person you are highlighting and contouring...and their skin tone. Just know, contour is a few shades darker and highlight a few shades lighter. Luminosity and such is personal preference. Example, I can use a deep face powder to contour and a lighter face powder to highlight which is what I often do on myself.

DJ M was pretty on point with her response, lol. No need to say anymore, but don't forget to use a good blush/contouring brush! I was using a blush brush from Target and was ok with it. But then I switched to Real Techniques contour brush and man it looks so much better. But that's just me!

The very basic way to contour would be to enhance the persons natural bone structure. Shade in all the hallows of the face and highlight the high points. After you have mastered that you could move on to altering someones face shape if you wanted to. Just remember that dark shades will recede areas and light shades will bring things forward, So, for example, if the person had a large forehead and wanted it to appear smaller, you would shade the top of the forehead by the hairline. This is going to shrink that area and make the forehead appear smaller.
