i am currently working for mac right now and it was such a pain to go through the process to work there but all very well worth it! lol.
pretty much go to the counter/store you are going to apply for and drop off a resume to the manager. make sure you have a full face of makeup so they can see some of your talent. be sure to be very persistent and check up on your application so they know you really want it.
a good position to go for first especially if your an upcoming makeup artist is to go for their freelance position. you get to do everything the girls do except for not having to deal with the responsibility of dealing with the cash register. you get to play with makeup all day instead.
once you pass the first interview, they will have you do a makeup trial. it all depends on what they want you to do. i had to two trials and they were both very different. during those trials you get a time limit to finish your makeup application and they will keep an eye on your technique and your sanitation. but overall its a really fun process. i hope i was able to help you out a bit. good luck! :)
