Will Sally Henson Crackle nail polish crackle when not on top of another nail polish like if you put just it on your nail?

Actually I tried it and it doesn't crackle when there isn't a nail polish under it...

Mine didn't crackle unless there was a nail polish under it either. I tried putting it on my nail wheels figuring it'd just crackle, but it didnt, and I couldnt figure out why! But when I put a polish on the nail wheel, then the crackle over it, it crackled. Weird!

It will not crackle if you do not put a first layer of nail polish down. I think it has to do with the texture of nail polish being smooth or that your nails have pores in them or something. But the above ideas are correct, put a clear coat down and you're ready to go :)

crackle polishes need polish underneath them for them to work..they don't dry evenly which is why they crackle, but the slide on the polish making the nice ridges we like. it probably worked on the nail wheel because its made of plastic so it has a similar finish to regular polish. @Terra is probably right, a clear polish should do the trick!

it does craclke.put clear polish under.i have put it on my bare nails with the silver one,it did work.it didn't do anything to my nails.

Just think of your nailbed as a porous surface - when the paint is drying, it shrinks to "crackle" - and when the paint sits atop a porous surface, it clings and prevents it from doing what it should. A clear top coat gives the surface of your nail "slip" between your nail bed and crackle paint because it's filled in the porous parts of your nails, which allows it to shrink easier and crackle,  =D
