It depends on what makeup.. Like lip gloss? I would ok that at a young age maybe 10-12... Eye shadow maybe 13-14 and foundation and blush probably 16.

7 and 8th graders in my skool wear a lot. Its stupid cuz then you mess up your skin and you don't look dressed up at parties.

I started wearing makeup in 7th grade. I didn't really know what I was doing back then, but I sure had fun doing it.

I'm 14 and I wear a full face, but I keep it light and natural looking.

I think 12 at the earliest, and that should be just lip gloss and mascara. Thirteen you can start adding stuff, maybe eye liner on occasion? Or a light eye shadow? At fourteen or fifteen, they can start wearing how ever much makeup they want, but the important thing is that they know how to put it on correctly. You could wear a full face of makeup and still look really natural if applied the correct way. Ultimately, I think it's the parents/guardians decision. Some fourteen year olds are mature enough for makeup(won't overuse the privilege by wearing a ton/not washing it off) so they may not be ready for makeup. And some thirteen year olds may be mature enough to not abuse the privilege of makeup, and maybe they are ready. ~

I agree with most posters that the main purpose or effect of makeup is making someone look older, and more attractive. When a child wears makeup, they are adding years to their appearance without adding years to their mental development--which opens a nasty can of worms when people believe they are older than they are. I knew girls who, in seventh grade (12 years old) were getting hit on by grown men because they wore makeup and looked older. The girls thought it was funny, and were too immature to realize that that attention is inappropriate and could be dangerous. Not only is it unbecoming of a little girl to wear a full face of makeup like a farce of a grown woman, it is downright improper.

There is absolutely NO need for makeup before senior high school. Who are you trying to impress when you're twelve years old? You aren't going on dates, or going to socials, nor formals. There's just no need for it. Everyone has acne at that age, that is when you learn to deal with flaws in your appearance and grow self I confidence-- not learn to hide behind a mask. Adding makeup to that mix doesn't encourage self esteem, it hinders it. How will girls learn to love themselves if the world tells them, you should conceal that acne (which is totally normal) or you aren't pretty.

I didn't wear makeup until my senior year of highschool, and I am glad that my mom made me wait. I see girls walking around like painted ladies with way too much makeup on, getting really negative attention, and it is just sad.

That's the problem, Cassandra. They use makeup as a crutch and have false confidence, when they should be cultivating confidence without feeling like they need it. And it does matter what others think, because it can be very damaging to their reputation (undeservedly) AND they are attracting negative and potentially dangerous attention from older individuals. At a young age, human cognitive development isn't capable of handling those situations very well. There's just no excuse to bring that upon oneself, or allow one's daughter to take that chance. There's plenty of time when they grow up to play with makeup, let children be children.

Emily you said it better than I could have ever put into words! I don't understand why girls think they have to wear makeup to cover up imperfections like acne when theirs girls out there with burn scars who will never be able to cover it. Color pigmentation problems or large birthmarks on the face I can completely understand, but acne? No excuse. It will only get worst and I can't emphasize WORST enough. If they really want acne to go away then they need to let their young breakout prone skin breathe. If celebrities can expose themselves without makeup when their image is their life and career, then teenage girls who are just worried what other boys or girls think of them can too. If more girls were confident in their appearance bullies will not have anything to pick on. I had gaps in my teeth all my life and never once did I get picked on in high school because I owned it and still do. My point is their are imperfections that are harder to cover so don't take little things like acne during puberty for granted.

This will forever be controversial topic and only society, different cultures and the actual parents can be real judge of how young is too young for makeup. So as I've said before I'm many other topics no one is right or wrong but it is interesting to see everyone's views on the topic varying depending on age and location.
