How do you know if your mascara is out of date or dried up? I have nice eyelashes which aren't in bad condition at all before I put mascara on this is, when I put my mascara on my eyelashes go horrible, when I curl them they all go in different directions, even I I brush them through they fall back into the sticking together position, the mascara doesn't seem to coat my lashes very nice either, it sort of misses bits out and at the very top bits of my lashes gets all flaky so when I try to pick them out Lyme tops bits of my eyelashes come out as though they are very crunchy and dry, is this because of my mascara? Is there any mascara you know of what gives your eyelashes a 'luscious' look and doesn't dry looking crunchy and horrible, almost looks wet like you just applied it? Help!

Hi Yasmin,
Mascara has a shelf life of about 3 months. This is mostly because of the air bubbles and bacteria that creates a wonderful environment for bacteria to grow in ;)
It sounds like the mascara you are using just isn't right for you or that you should go back through with a lash comb to straighten out your lashes. You can also try Givenchy's Phenomen'eyes Mascara which has a spherical brush that coats each lash.
I hope that helps!

When mascara is brand new it's very wet on the wand and when it's old it's gooey and clumpy. I change mine every two months. I use the Maybelline Mega Plush Volum' mascara and it works wonders! Also, to curl your lashes without them getting all crazy curl them before you put the mascara on or if you like curling them after you put mascara on curl them when they are completely dry. Hope this helps!

I throw out my mascaras after about 3 months. If you think it's expired, the best thing to do is to chuck it - your eyes are very sensitive and lash follicles can get infected very easily, so don't take any chances. I use Benefit's BadGal Lash and L'Oreal's Voluminous Lash mascara, both in waterproof because it holds a curl much better and longer than the original formula.

You should also throw away your mascara if it starts to change smell. That's a sign that bacteria are growing in the tube. Also, if you have pink eye (conjunctivitis) you'll have to throw away mascara no matter how new it is, or you'll keep getting infected. Same goes for gel or liquid liner, primer with a wand, or cream eyeshadows.
