I always see these amazing beauty rooms and makeup collections posted by the beauty gurus on YouTube. I have recently started growing my makeup collection but now am beginning to wonder if it is all in vain. At what point does it become a waste because doesn't makeup have an expiration period? Some of the collections are so massive I wonder if most of the makeup will be trown out after awhile. Do you have to keep replacing items constantly in order to keep your collection fresh? I hope you all understand what I am asking lol.

I really feel like its a waste bc makeup does have expiration date. I have a pretty big collection but I'm a freelance makeup artist and need to have a wide rang. I try not splurge on "the new palette" I sometime add to my collection if I feel I need more variety but I don't over do it and buy every new makeup that comes out..

M.G. is right, makeup expires, and using expired makeup isnt healthy. My collection isnt small but its far from large. I've decided its best to use up what I have and then only start repurchasing what I truly need. I'll probably buy the Naked 2 palette, my favorite eyeliner and mascara, my favorite foundation and powder and a few lip products. It won't be a total waste of money because Ill use up what I have before it expires.

It all depends on the persons purpose for the makeup, I have a pretty good size collection and I have makeup that is strictly for collection purposes nothing I know I will use, I do have some regrets on certain things I've gotten just as a impulse buy or cuz it was on sale and I slowed down on that this year cuz I used to but what ever came out at the moment wether it was on trend or not mainly what too faced and urban decay put out now that was a waste, now I'm just focused on getting what I really want, I think its a waste when you have 15 foundation bottles that you know your not going to use and will expire quick there not LE so you know you will see that on shelf in 4 months, having a ton of liners knowing they will dry up before you even get to it, mascara same thing, concealer, highlights knowing you only need a small amout and yet you have 20 of them like your going to use up all of them and last but not least lipstick one I'm guilty of getting lots of just to get it and with no collection purpose having 35 nudes and all colors being similar and knowing they don't have a long shelf life, point is it depends on the intension the makeup is purchase for but buying makeup cuz its on trend or cuz all these youtubers have it is a waste thats one thing I'm not guilty of is following trends I do me and I don't need to be following what people are trying to push f that I think some people need to look at what they have and use it up or shop your stash I know I'm guilty of not using something and forget I even have things, my goal for next year is going to be to use up certain products I've had that in my mind this year was to not buy as much and I this good I've always wanted to use up my stuff and ran into a video where they call it project pan I think and its the same concept of just hitting pan or using up certain products and show the progress you have made, I'm a do that next year I was thinking of posting a thread on it if anyone wants to join it be pretty cool to see our progress dam this was a long as post lol forgot the last time I wrote something this long in here its been a cool min lol.

I don't have a huge collection, but it's still more than I need. I will keep my blushes, bronzers, shadows and highlighters forever unless I give them away, because I feel powder products last forever. Any liquid, cream or, glosses and lipsticks will get thrown out if I havent used them for a year. Even that's too long, I'm just lazy.

I have a relatively excessive collection, but the good news in my case is that the vast majority of it is powder products, which as long as they're stored in a cool, dry place generally do not go bad.

as far as product expiration is concerned, you can tell when products go off based on change in scent, color, texture and performance. the expiration dates placed on products are more of a general guideline, in that if a product deteriorates to 99% quality versus 100% quality, that is considered to be an expired product, even though it's still functional from an application standpoint. does that make sense? the second a product is no longer exactly the same as when it was first produced, it is considered expired from a chemical standpoint even though it is still fine and safe for use.

The only products that I would be concerned about expiration on are liquid products, and even more so than that, sunscreen. expired sunscreen, when used, can actually react with the sun and your skin and give you chemical burns, so that's always something to be careful with. Most people I know go through liquid foundation fast enough that it won't expire before they can finish it and lipsticks are hard to finish but it is always obvious when they're no longer safe to use.

But I still have and happily use eyeshadow that I've had for 10 years. It is fine, safe and especially since I'm only using it on myself I am not worried, nor will I be unless my eyeshadows start growing mold or something equally gross.

Thank you so much ladies. You all have helped me make up (no pun intended ;P) my mind about what products are worth collecting and what are not.

I'm with Hannah on this as well my powder and pigment products are massive, I do own a rather huge lipstick collection as well, I clean my lipstick on a regular basis and nobody uses them but me. When they start to smell or turn I throw them out. I only have one unopened backup of each liquid product I buy and with mascara and eyeliner I throw them away or use them up within 3 months, I do have 3 unopened tubes of mascara as backup. I also have some collective items especially from mac that I have never opened.

I have a massive makeup collection and well I'll probably not be able to use even a tenth of the products before they expire, I enjoy trying new things and it's my thing, makeup is my thing. So I don't really think too much of it. I regularly go through my collection and clear it out.

I would say be careful with what you are collecting. Powder products can be stored and sanitized quite easily. I myself collect eyeshadow palettes everything else I usually buy as needed.
