Any skin care products that will hydrate extremely dry, flakey skin. My skin is cracked and dry. I can exfoliate at night and I still wake up with flakey skin. Please help!!

What's your skin care routine?

Right now my skincare routine is using a sensitive cleanser and Clinique dramatically different lotion. I try and keep it as simple as possible, but my skin is a cracked, dry, flakey mess.

The cleanser I use is the clean & clear morning burst.

Are you still battling breakouts, or has the accutane had enough time to accomplish its job effectively?

I'm still breaking out on my cheeks but every where else is clear besides my hyper pigmentation

Grab something like this

http://www.paulaschoice.com/shop/skin-care-categories/aha-and-bha-exfoliants/_/Skin-Perfecting-Two-Percent-BHA-Lotion-Exfoliant

A BHA contained in a hydrating formula will help your cheek area clear up as well as hydrate it. If you are worried your skin will be too sensitive try their 1% lotion. If you have never used a chemical exfoliant before only use this every other day, at night, for about a week so your skin can acclimate, then try bumping it to two days before skipping one, then up to every night.

You will also want to layer with something hydrating on top of that. I recommend something like CeraVe PM Face Lotion at night. If your moisture barrier is damaged to the point where it feels unbearably tight and dry immediately after washing, it may be necessary to create an artificial barrier for your skin until it has a chance to repair itself. Something like Aquaphor Advanced Therapy Healing Ointment can help as a temporary measure. If your accutane seems to be working to get rid of your acne try to put the thick texture out of your mind; sometimes drastic measures are needed to repair your skin.

Also important is to be wearing sunscreen everyday. For skin that is dry/damaged and likely sensitive, a mineral-based active is best.

Items worth checking out:

Alba Botanica Very Emollient Sunscreen Mineral Protection Fragrance Free SPF 30 (probably the best formula+price combination)
Paula's Choice Skin Recovery SPF 30
Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Defense SPF 30
Josie Maran Argan Daily Moisturizer SPF 47

Banana Boat Kids Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50 is a decent budget friendly option. This has a massive tube but a more basic formula.

Thank you loves!! I appreciate you all so much?

If you are still on Accutane I would stay away from any treatments. Use something like cerave moisturizing bar to wash your face and use a heavy cream to moisturize. use aquaphor for lips.

A great cream for dry flaky skin is Dr Jart Ceramidin Cream. They also have a lotion that is really more of a hydrating serum. I use both products- my skin was getting dry from winter weather. Highly recommend.

Just a couple of things I forgot to mention:

? yes I am still on Accutane
? my skin is very sensitive and does NOT agree with any acne fighting agents like salicylic acid, etc. ingredients like that only make me get chemical burns, which is why I'm on accutane.
? also, my skin takes longer to heal than normal people. once I get a spot it takes ages to go away.

thank you for all the suggestions, just thought I would clear up a few things.

What salicylic acid products have you used in the past that gave you chemical burns?

Dec 12, 2016

Christa F.

Proactive, x out, clean & clear, murad, etc. I always used the products as directed but my skin is very sensitive. any acne fighting type ingredients destroy my skin.

I don't really like any of those brands specifically because their products tend to be harsh. Clean and Clear has some decent BP products if you can tolerate it, but that's about it.

I use a cleanser from there that is good for sensitive skin.

It's not only those brands that have given me chemical burns. even acne products targeted at sensitive skin, let my skin obliterated

My skin was the same way. I was on Accutane in the beginning of this year and the best thing for it was simple, hydrating products.

Don't exfoliate every night! Once a week is plenty. :) I agree with using Cerave, and use aquafor for your lips and any dry patches. Best of luck to you!

I'm pretty late but I have VERY dry skin and it even peals when I wear makeup. my face is super sensitive. the best face cleanser that has helped has been the olive oil st.ives bit sadly it discontinued.. I went months searching. going to sefora, Mac etc. and after dropping into my local drug store I found an amazing face cleanser called Garnier cleansing oil! it works magic!! helps removes makeup as well! you can find it at your local walmart as well. cost no more then $10. all you need is 2 pumps and the face cleanser will last you about 4 months or more. I love it! and live it! I also use the origin night face mask you can find at sefora for about $17. I use it at night and even in the mornings cause it really helps with hydration. hope that helps

I agree start slower and build up to using it every night. I use exuviance ultra restorative cream. I believe it is meant to help peeps recover from facial peels, lasers, etc. get it on amazon bc it is half the price than ulta.
