My experience:
I've only gotten my makeup done at Sephora for my senior pictures during the summer and I actually enjoyed it.
The only down side was they don't put eyelashes or line your lips with liner.
What's your experiences?

I personally would go to Sephora because they have lots of brands/products to choose from and you get to buy products and get the service done.

With MAC, you're only limited to Mac products. To be honest, ladies that work at Mac are not very kind (I'm sure that's not how they all are but I've dealt with many rude Mac workers)

With freelance MUA, it's comforting because usually they have an education background in Cosmetology/makeup but I find that they are expensive. Most of them will use their own products but I find so much risk with that because you never know what your skin is allergic too.

This is my personal opinion so I don't mean to offend anyone but I would never get my makeup done at sephora... Idk if its in my head but I don't trust the employees or their makeup skill and sometimes when I walk around I see some apply makeup all wrong. I have gotten my makeup done at mac and I do like it. I mean it all depends on the person but in general I enjoy it more and I find that the employees are better trained for application.

@Lara I've actually noticed that it doesn't take much of training to become a makeup artist at Sephora I heard they only take a couple of classes and then boom they are certified. That's why I'm kinda wanting to try a freelance MUA. Since they have a lot of experience with many face shapes.

Agree with Lara. I feel like mua at Mac have more experience & you get to decide what's put on you or what you want or what you like. Senhora workers seem to just tell you most sold items & put it on so you can be like yeah ill buy. But I've always always had a great experience at Mac! Plus spending $50 just to get your makeup done is really worth it to me!

They put false eyelashes on at Sephora, you just have to buy them. And they've always lined my lips. Maybe you need to visit a different store.

Though on topic I'm pretty on the edge these days when I get makeovers at Sephora. Sometimes I absolutely love it and take dozens of photos and will come back to get that same SA to do my makeup again. But sometimes they do it so wrong that I'd rather have a naked face. I'm trying to learn how to do my full face nicely so I don't have to see it go horribly wrong.

I've never seen lashes put on at Sephora. Perhaps the rules are regulated by state as some require a licensed Estie to apply lashes. There is a level of hygiene and risk involved that extends beyond applying cosmetic product. I remember reading an article on Beautylish about why some make-up counters at department stores don't permit lash application. zi assume this would differ based on state law.

I have had product applied at Sephora and on each occassion it was done horribly. The employees were helpful, but the skill level was simply not there...including at their bustling downtown location.

Thank you rozberry!! I didt know that information!

You are so welcome, Carmen. I didn't know either until I read that article when it first appeared. I've never had make up applied completely at either place, but even when they put a concealer or foundation on me, I cringe at the results. Ha!

Personally, I'd rather get my makeup done with a freelance makeup artist. I feel like sometimes Sephora workers don't have the experience or skills to do makeup correctly. And personally, I don't like getting my makeup done at a store like that with people walking around. I'd rather do it in the comfort of my own home or someplace more private where the makeup artist can use their magic!

I live in Canada so things may be different, but I know it's definitely something they do where I live. They even have it listed on those little menus that have all the mini makeover choices.

Mac, I got my makeup done at a stefans store (hairdressing store and makeup "artists") for my formal, I regretted going there and getting a deal on my hair and makeup and wished the whole time I'd gone to MAC instead. It sounds weird but some places hire people that aren't even particularly experienced in makeup application therefor you leave wishing you could go wash you face, that was my experience anyways. Girls that went to the mac to get theirs done looked bombbbb.

I work at a Sephora and some of the girls are really skilled at makeup and then some are bad and don't know how to put it on themselves. We can apply lip liner but no inner rim eyeliner and lashes. Sephora workers are only trained really on sanitation I've never been trained makeup wise at Sephora. And at least at my Sephora we have one mua that does most of the makeovers and all you have to do is spend $50 in makeup so that's like buying two products so it's worth it

I don't like the hard sell that Sephora sometimes does. Often, I get a really delightful staff member that knows the product lines, but they seem to be perplexed if I inquire about my own needs verses what they love. I love Kat's products, but a dry gal seeking a full coverage foundation with a natural finish isn't going to want "Lock it" for example simply because the staff member is over the moon about it. I go in the stores and really focus on ingredients...and this is where Sephora trips up and even the most helpful staff member seems undertrained. I don't go to MAC, but instead with a friend to MAC Pro. I've had them pull out an entire album that was very ingredient specific and list benefits of certain ingredients in detail to me. It may be that they recognize my friend and gush over her because I remember a few MAC counter visits where I felt snubbed.

I agree that an MUA at home or their salon if nearby is the best option. I would feel uncomfortable with all those people gawking..lol
