Okay, so this is kind of an odd question but I figured it would be worth a shot.
I am now using my wheelchair for mobility about 85-90% of the time, and when I do I wear fingerless padded gloves. I like keeping my fingernails long, for aesthetic and... laziness... reasons.
The problem I run into is that I am getting my nails caught in my wheels. They aren't breaking, but it is scuffing the nails pretty badly (making polish a real PITA) and it hurts too. I don't want to give up my talons if I can help it, and full-finger gloves are not an option for dexterity reasons. Any tricks for not getting your nails caught in your wheels? Or does nobody else have this problem and I'm just a klutz?

When I was wheel chair bound due an injury ions ago for three months I remember using my palms because I too was a complete lutz and was getting my fingers caught). Just one day I went with my palms not giving it any thought whatsoever but on the flip side I ended up with rough, dry/dirty palms.

For me I have to have short nails and I still get my fingers caught. Lol. I know when I'm... Gliding you could call it... I use my padded palms to grab the outer edge of the wheel of I need to. After being bound for like... Two years I could have long nails, but I can't paint them myself so new.

Emily I don't know if this is any help but while reading your post I was thinking "Gel polish"!! The gel polish can make your own nail stronger and the stay on for a lot longer so I don't think it will wear off the same way when getting caugth in the wheel.

My wheels are a type of composite plastic and rubber and my hand grips are steel, which is nice because they ride really smooth... but it is all a bit too much slip on my leather gloves. I do use my palms for braking and steering, but for pushing I don't have enough traction and need to actually grip, resulting in tangled fingers because I'm not coordinated. d'oh!
Sabrina, any recommendations for brands? I've never used a gel polish before. That's something available outside of a salon right? I seem to recall this being a consumer product but for whatever reason now I'm not sure. I forget things a lot now with this condition.

That's what my chair is lol. It's nice I agree but I like it now. Got me some arm muscles. I agree though. Ooh, I think Sally Hanson has a gel Polish at Walmart. I'm pretty sure I've used that. I had to fight it off lol.

Oh gosh I don't even know any good brands :/ I never used it myself! But I can look it up :) Only thing I know is that people don't like the Sally Hansen gel polish ;)

For gel nails, they are usually only available in salons. However, sally hansen and rimmel (I think!) have no light gels which are easy to use. The polish becomes kinda thicker than regular polish. I have the sally hansen. To be honest, I'm not sure it will make a huge difference :/ but its worth a try

$40... for a top/base coat... I think I just died. And I thought Seche was expensive, oy vey! O_o
I'll check out some reviews on that Sally Hansen. Now that I think about it, I tried a product from them during an archaeology dig that was some kind of two-step nail polish that was supposed to be long lasting and indestructible. It was the new thing at the time (three years ago) and might be the same thing we're talking about now. It was terrible then, but that might be because I applied it in the wilderness and then worked with my hands digging and such for 10 hours a day, 7 days a week for 8 weeks after that...
Emily B. I always had sad little tyrannosaurus arms with strong thighs and calves, so I'm slowly morphing into the exact opposite and it is bizarre. I still have meaty thighs, but I can see the muscle wasting (even if my family can't tell yet). But at least I'll be able to arm wrestle like a champ.

I know OPI just came out with a 3-step, no light gel line. I'm not sure how well it works though!

I like the sensationail gel polish... but I get too close to the cuticle and then it lifts a bit and I peel it and I end up ripping the gel off along with the top layer of my nail... but that's a Harlyn issue, not an everyone issue.
