What Do You Think Of School Uniforms?

In Ireland we have to wear school uniforms in primary and secondary school I think its the same in a lot of Europe. of course in school we hated having to wear them we knew there was reasons for them like preventing bullying but we thought that bullying wouldn't be a big problem in a small close knit school like ours. however being in college now I can definitely see the benefits not only to stop bullying but its so much easier not worrying about what you.re going to wear in the morning. I know its fun picking out a nice outfit but it really does save a lot of stress. what does everyone else think? especially everyone in countries where this isn't normal would you wear a uniform? do you think it would go down well in your school?

I went to a school for a yr when I was a kid and we had to wear uniforms it drove me insane even as a fourth grader I hated the fact that I was being stripped of my individuality and my brother has to go to an alternative school for kids that get into a lot of trouble and everyone refers to it as the khaki factory lol.

I wore uniforms from 1st grade until I graduated! I liked uniforms because it was a lot cheaper than having to worry about making sure you didn't wear the same thing twice! I liked them! Bullying will be everywhere whether you wearing a uniform or hanging out somewhere that's just how people are.

Amber that is true people were still bullied but do you think at least it stopped people bullying others that could not afford to wear something different every day like you said it saved a lot of stress of worrying about wearing the same thing twice something I think children should not have to worry about. Tiffany you could still do you hair and makeup to express yourself or were there strict rules about that?

Used to hate my uniform when I was in secondary school. I'm from ireland aswell. it was a grey knee length skirt, grey shirt, black and red striped tie and black jumper. we were forced to wear the skirts even in the winter which got pretty cold so in third year my class started a protest so the girls could wear trousers if we wanted. It took us a year to win the battle with the teachers and now girls can opt between a grey skirt or grey trousers for school. most girls opt for the trousers because of the knee length skirt rule. I loved having a uniform because it took all the pressure off although I was bullied anyway. (think it would have been worse if we didnt have the uniform as I was a tom boy and spent my life in tracksuits and hoodies). there's bullying regardless of uniform. I was bullied for being a tom boy, not caring about what way my hair was and I didnt wear any makeup) I finished school 7 years ago and wear makeup occasionally now.

I wore uniforms throughout my school life and I find it easier and does save me a lot of stress. I also didn't have to worry about wearing thr same thing twice!

It depends sometimes on how they look. I loved my school uniform. We had red and green checkered skirts/skorts. A white blouse, and a navy blue sweater vest. and I usually wore berkenstocks.

That really sucks I think a lot of schools in Ireland are too strict. In my school girls did have the choice to wear trousers, wear long or short skirts and style their make up and hair as long as it was reasonable and presentable. I can't believe people bullied you for being a tomboy I think its very cute and its great that you did your own thing and you are comfortable in your own skin. I wish I was confident enough to go out without at least concealer or foundation. I guess there is just people like that everywhere, unfortunately.

I never went to a school that required uniforms, thankfully. It would've driven me crazy! My best friend went to a private Catholic high school and she said that girls definitely turned uniforms into a way of having cliques. The snooty girls with designer purses would roll up their skirts to make them shorter, the "rebels" would wear colored tights under them, etc. She said that people were more judgemental about clothes because everyone had to wear the same thing, so the little details became the focus of bullies.

In contrast, I went to a public high school and we didn't have any issues with bullying because of personal style. There were the typical groups: jocks, preps, geeks, goths, etc. but there wasn't any problem. I enjoyed wearing my blue jeans and sneakers. :) I think it is more akin to the "real world" where you need to learn how to deal with all kinds of people. I think uniforms would've robbed us of that.

Well the main reason for me being a tomboy was because I have 5 brothers and no sisters so didnt really have anyone to teach me about makeup or hair (my mother didnt bother with makeup either). I spent most of my free time our playing sportd or building forts with the lads in my area. even to this day most of my friends are male (can't stand the bitchiness that seems to happen a lot with girls) and I wear makeup only once or twice a week. even my boyfriend of 4 years says he prefers me without makeup and when I wear tracksuits and his hoodies because it means I'm being true to who I am. take today I'm dressed in a pair of grey cotten trackie bottoms and an oversized hoodie with no makeup and my hair in a ponytail. most of my male friends say aswell that they can't stand being out with a girl and having her run to the bathroom every half hour to check their makeup or fix their hair.

Emily you make a good point that we would learn to accept everyones different styles it might teach us to be a bit more mature in the real world. one the other hand they are cheap for families that can't afford to buy new clothes all the time a good uniform will last you for years myself and my two sisters all used the same skirt. It does depend on the type of school too and youre right people do modify their uniform to their own style. I think most schools in Ireland don't allow that though, like they are way too strict. Stacy I know just how you feel I don't talk to my " girlfriends" anymore they are so bitchy and backstabbing all my friends now are boys and they are so much easier to live with, and so much more honest and just plain nice. if only they would discuss makeup and clothes with me lol. Youre boyfriend is totally right you are very naturally pretty anyway but you always look best in what you feel comfortable in.

@rebecca I was really young when I went to a uniform school so I wasn't into hair and makeup but I have friends that went to a private catholic high school and they wouldn't let them wear a lot of makeup.

Rebecca N. exactly it did stop more bullying because a student couldn't make fun of another student who was wearing the same thing as the person pointing fingers(: I loved my uniforms, and like you told Tiffany I expressed my individuality by doing my hair different wearing different shoes and what not. I'm glad you agree Rebecca N.(:

Tiffany well that isn't so bad then that you were young you didn't care much about what you were wearing its not fair about the make up though thats could destroy a girls confidence which is one of the aims of the anonymity of a uniform is to promote confidence and amber well said :-)

My sons go to a charter school and yes thy require all students to wear uniforms.My kids so far hve nvr bn bullied thank God cuz I'm nt the one for that bt kids mk fun of ea othr no matter wht.Da clothes r nt so much the issue its the physical appearance kids usually attack.Bt I've dne everything to mk sure my kids r nt being messed wit.

Waaah I'm so angry with my school, it doesent have uniforms, cause I love them. We have this school "board" thing, where each class has a president and we have meetings every month. A lot of us, class presidents have suggested to get uniforms for the school but they never took it seriously.
