If I'm getting french tips, which would be better?

I think you should go for the gel instead, I think it looks a lot better and real, and it lasts longer.

I prefer gel in terms of being less damaging to the nail.

I prefer gel. From what I noticed, they're harder and last longer (I work moving and building furniture, and they hold up fairly well). However they are more expensive then acrylic.

I've never noticed one being more damaging then the other. Both, when they come off, shred my nail beds to pieces.

Sorry are you referring to liquid gels? if so yes way better than acrylics. I had mine on for a year then took them off & my nails were still very strong and healthy I do agree you need a good nail tech tho for them to not be damaging. I used to have acrylics & was worried about switching since at the time my nail tech was the only one in my state to have them & know how to do it freehand but I wouldnt go back!

Didn't your nails grow out?

I've had both for years on end. started w acrylics switched to gels and would never go back. I find the gels don't lift at all or at least way less then the acrylics

I guess this is another case of what happens will differ with everyone. I found that acrylics destroyed my nails whereas the gel did not. It could be from a difference in product to a difference in application. My nails were fine after removal of the gel.

I've had both in the past. I prefer gel. if they soak it off properly by wrapping in foil with cotton wool and acetone it doesn't damage your nails, or at least it didn't mine. When I had acrylic it takes a lot longer and some places use like a dentist drill with sandpaper on to file it off. After I had acrylics my nails were so thin and weak I couldn't do anything with them and I had to wait for them to grow out. I have natural nails now and enjoy painting them myself and the Dior Gel Top Coat is great. It dries fast, it's really glossy and it really stops chipping and wearing off.
