A lighter shade is going to give that highlighting effect. Ex. if you're going for that "Kim K" look which doesn't always look good on everyone. For normal concealing it should be the same color as your skin.

If you're covering blemishes, its ideal that its the shade of your skin tone but if its an under eye concealer, its recommended that its lighter in order to create a natural looking highlight. it also helps make you look more awake and draws attention to the center of your face :) I hope this helped

I agree with Megan to an extent however if you are attempting to cover extreme darkness you'll want to use a color corrector first. Also using a lighter color over noticeably dark under eyes can make them appear darker.

^ exactly what the other girls have said. it really depends on what you're using the concealer for.
if you are using it on blemishes, you want a concealer that matches your skin tone. if you're using it on your under eye area, most people buy a lighter shade concealer to give a highlighted effect :p you can also contour with a concealer that's 1-2 shades darker than your skin tone. there's so much you can do with concealer!

I've also heard and practiced with good effects that for a lighter skinned person you go *slightly darker to conceal and for a darker skinned person you go slightly lighter to conceal. Or matching works. Ha ha.

If anyone is curious as to why you should use a color corrector like the above ladies mention, I recommend looking at MUA Jordan Liberty's Video on Common Make Up Mistakes.
I am on my phone so I do not have it handy with me but he demonstrates the difference in using a lighter concealer vs using a color corrector this way you can physically see the difference.
However, I recommend asking Jacqueline as three is a trick on using lighter concealer on your under eye area as well. She has previously mentioned it before as there is more than one technique. 😊
