Is smashbox vegan and cruelty free?
Mar 19, 2014
Meagan M.
Ah! I've been wondering that too. I had the site of animal friendly and cruelty free products. If you google that you should find PETA's 2014 animal cruelty lists. I don't believe I saw smash box on the list and If you check the products it will say no testing and it if it's an vegan product.

Most makeup companies are 'cruelty free' vegan, no I don't think so. The packaging usually would say if they are vegan.

Smashbox claims they don't test on animals but they are owned by Estée Lauder so that's pretty debatable. They are not vegan, not even close.

Smashbox is cruelty free as it doesn't test on animals. and therefore it's okay for vegans

Leah T. It's not okay for vegans because it contains animal byproducts.

Beeswax isn't an animal byproduct. It comes from the hive. No makeup uses animal byproducts. If that was the case we would he chicken liver in our makeup.

Janet and Bryanna I guess strict vegans would most likely not use this product however I usually go by PETA and their standards. It really tends on their beliefs.

Wow, makeup does contain animal ingredients and beeswax is an animal byproduct. Do you know how beeswax is made? Just because it is not tested does not mean it is cruelty free and contains no animal ingredients. There are worse things in your skincare, toothpaste, makeup, etc. than chicken liver.
And please do not trust peta for everything, they are not a great company. their information is not accurate. I always check with the companies that I am interested in. More vegan companies are becoming popular these days and easily found in several stores. :) I've been animal free for over fourteen years. If you ever need any information feel free to ask.

Michelle I just bought a hand lotion with beeswax, is that cruelty? How is beeswax made? I just thought it was kind of like honey!

Thank you everyone. I'll just find makeup that is animal friendly. :)

Nymeria Elf is both vegan and cruelty free I'm pretty sure!

Hey Sabrina! The wax is secreted from their glands, is placed and chewed. That is the easiest way to describe though there is much more to it. Honey is also an animal byproduct. The act of making these things is not cruel but the processes in which people collect them are usually cruel and cause suffering and can cause death to some bees.
Nymeria, I really like Pur Minerals. They are mostly vegan and can be found online or at kohls. :)

So should I feel bad for using this lotion?
Mar 19, 2014
Michelle B.
I will add that it is not so common to find a completely vegan company that has everything you want or need. So you kind of have to get what is vegan and what you like from different companies. Always search the individual product in case it is not vegan. Look up urban decay as well. Some of their stuff is vegan.

You don't have to feel bad. Only if you are vegan/ vegetarian or just truly care about the treatment of the bees. I don't mean that in any rude way at all. Lots of people use animal byproducts on a daily basis and always eat meat without feeling bad. It is the individual and their opinion that matters. I feel bad if I accidentally use something with animal product in it or eat something that has mayo in it. That's because I am highly against animal cruelty. You do not have to feel bad if it is not your belief. :)

Well I'm not vegan or vegetarian, but I do care about the welfare of animals (and luckily lives in a country that does a lot for the animals) and have worked as a veterinarian nurse... so if something is directly cruel then I don't wanna use a product!
Mar 19, 2014
Michelle B.
That's good! :) I wanted to work in the veterinarian field but I realized I would always be depressed. :/ I'm too sensitive with that. I can't even go and adopt a dog or cat without getting upset and wanting to take them all! lol Saint ives makes good animal free lotions and they are cheap as well. :)

Again, you really have to read each one because some may have something in it. It seems hard to do at first but it becomes much easier. :)

Yeah that's why I had to stop, I found my self crying everyday, it was horrible!
Unfortunately I can't get Saint ives in Denmark, but I will look for it when I go to Germany :)

Just throwing this out there for the vegan crowd: Geek Chic Cosmetics is vegan, gluten free, and cruelty free. They are based in Oregon and have amazing products. :)

They don't test on animals but the products aren't vegan.
