Big words that you cannot pronounce. That's how I narrow down my search then I pick out my final product by which one I see has good reviews. Hope I helped.

I avoid sulfates. For me, it is more about washing my hair less. I need those natural oils for my psoriasis and even water alone fades color. I keep my rinsing in the cool side.

If you are going to avoid sulfates you also need to avoid silicones. Its like a cycle sulphates strip all the oils from your hair then you need to coat the hair in silicone to make it feel smooth, but then in the next wash you have to use sulphates as it strong enough to remove the silicones, then obviously you want your hair to feel nice so you use a silicone conditioner.
If you go sulphate free and don't go silicone free as well you end up with product build up.
This blog post about silicone is excellent: http://curly2kinky.com/c2k-blog/ponderings/
In products you want to avoid short chain alcohols because they are really drying. In the ingredients list it would show up as alcohol, alcohol denat, or isopropyl alcohol. Don't get these confused with long chain fatty alcohols such as cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol and cetearyl alcohol because these are actually very moisturising.
Also when buying hair spray make sure it has no water in it. Many hairsprays do but if the hairspray has water in it it will just make your style flop before it drys then holds the style.
