I want to get coloured contacts and I would like to know what brand is the best. My eyes are a dark shade of brown and the color of the contacts I want would be either a light icy blue (indigo), a stormy gray, or a lilac.

I loved having my colored contacts, however I also have a dark shade of Brown eyes. the color of contacts was a blue and it turned my eyes dark blue. so be very careful when you choose a color because your brown might over power the contacts

You're best off going to your optometrist and getting them to specially make you a set of the colour you choose, most contacts you purchase from other places aren't the right size and can show the colour of your eye underneath the contacts, an optometrist will be able to size them to your eyes :)

Hi there, Alice! I happen to work as an ophthalmic technician, so this is a topic I might be able to help you with.
If you are in the US, there is really only one widely available brand of opaque colored contact lenses: FreshLook. They are monthly disposable lenses and come in a wide variety of colors. There are also still a couple of brands that do theatrical contacts. That I am aware of, these typically come in single vials and are only really meant to be kept for a maximum of 12 months before they should be disposed of and replaced.
Whatever brand or color you go with, I strongly recommend being properly fit for your contacts by an optometrist or an ophthalmologist. Remember: Contacts are pieces of plastic that you put directly onto the surface of your eyes. If they don't fit you correctly, they can wind-up doing serious, sometimes permanent damage to your eyes and your vision.
Sorry if I sound a bit alarmist, but I can say with complete honesty that about 85% of the patients that I see for corneal abrasions, corneal ulcers, and eye infections are contact lens wearers. So, whatever you do, make sure that you consult an eye care professional.

I live up north in Canada. And I'm going to go see my eye doctor before choosing the contacts to get her input and to test out some of the contacts because I have heard that some coloured contacts work with brown eyes and some don't.

Get a know brand like fresh look or aciuvu. to me I honestly hate wearn my color contact bc I can't really see right as when I'm wearn regulr contacts. Deff take Elizabeths advice. I see off brand contact all the time be sold at swap meet or flea markets and those you should steer clear of.

What you've heard is correct. Some brands, like Acuvue 2 come in "color enhancer" shades. These are too translucent to really change the color of hazel or brown eyes and really only succeed at adding a little tint to lighter colored eyes.
I would definitely ask about FreshLook and see what else your doctor recommends. Some of the FreshLook lens colors are specifically made to work on darker eyes.

You couldnt have said it better elizabeth, I cringe at the thought of girls going to any place and getting contacts from anywhere cuz I messed up my eyes by getting contacts that where not fited and not knowing how to professionally take care of them.

This is the green contacts, sorry for the blurry photo I haven't worn them in a year and this was the best I could find. It looks natural but still bright on brown eyes. :)

Thank you for posting that Elizabeth! I have been a colored/costume lens wearer for years and I always try to tell people that you can't just order them plano (nonprescription) and be hunky dory.
After you have had a lens fitting (and ONLY after), you can order some nice lenses from Pinky Paradise. They have photos that show you what the lenses look like on real people, so you can judge how they will look on you. Pinky Paradise is a legitimate shop that sells genuine quality lenses; I have purchased from them as have hundreds of others (I can link to a cosplay forum where people have shared experiences if you are interested).
In my experience, the FreshLook lenses are not opaque at all. I have brown eyes and tried blue and green from both FreshLook and Acuvue and they were a waste of money (especially given how expensive they are domestic). I really like GEO and Super Pinky lenses (for circle lenses) and EDIT or ColorVue for color lenses. :)

Yeah you definitely can't wear colored lenses (especially circle lenses) every day. Colored lenses are thicker than regular vision lenses, and obstruct the cornea from obtaining oxygen. At first your eyes just feel dry and kind of itchy, but if this occurs long enough you can suffer hypoxia, leading to vision damage.
Only wear colored lenses for a few hours at a time (six or less, ideally, but always less than ten) and don't wear them every day. Gotta let your eyes breathe!
Also:
NEVER EVER SLEEP IN THEM. You will get what is commonly called chemical conjunctivitis, whereby the lens basically cements itself to your eyeball and you enter the eighth circle of hell when you go to the ER to get it out. Seriously, don't do it.
