You could mix some of the dye in your regular shampoo and conditioner after dying it. The upkeep won't be too difficult since you're not really doing anything to your roots. I think it would suit you. & you could do it yourself if you can't afford a salon. That's what I've been doing for years.

Oh, if you're doing your entire head a different color, then the upkeep will be difficult. You'll have to buy dye and touch up every week or every other week. You'll have to use two different dyes in two different bottles of your regular shampoo and conditioner. What I mean is, light purple in one shampoo and one conditioner, then the other purple in another. You could also bleach your head and use the deep purple in your shampoo and conditioner and use a purple toner on your ends.

Oh I'm only going to dye the roots of my hair to about the middle of my neck or lower... Not the whole head xD thanks shanae! However do you think I can still use hot water for my scalp? I find it easier to wash dandruff off with hot water

Could you show me an example of what you mean? & I don't recommend it, but if you use dye in your shampoo and conditioner, you'll be fine.

Or you could mix some dandruff shampoo in a color safe shampoo to protect your color and also keep away dandruff.

I want dye my hair in the style the first picture has, but with the colors of the second. I guess I'll have to find another way to deal with my dry scalp. :/ this is the only problem I'm running into.

You could try some hair masks, they tend to help dandruff. & so you want purple hair from your roots to the middle? or from the middle to the end and your roots your regular color?

I have bright red hair right now and also am fighting a never ending battle against dandruff from this cold winter weather. I shampoo my hair every other day and rotate back and forth between doing cold water when I use my color depositing shampoo and conditioner and hot water on days when I use my dandruff shampoo. The hot water will indeed fade your hair faster than using cold, but the dandruff shampoo is what really strips the color from my hair. Like Shanae said, as long as you invest in a color depositing shampoo and conditioner it will help immensely. I only touch my color up every 4-6 weeks. In my experience with purple hair in the past, it faded much faster than my current red does.

Wow that's super helpful Traci! Hmmm and would you suggest any colors that's last longer in your experience? Although I really like the violet fading look. I'm open to others :)

Vibrant colors don't really last long due to roots showing. Therefore, you have to touch up. As long as you keep using a color safe shampoo that's specifically for your hair color, you should be fine. Putting dye in your shampoo and conditioner will also keep your color vibrant.

I have only tried one brand of purple dye, Manic Panic, and I don't really recommend it as it faded super fast. It did fade out to a really pretty silvery lavender color that I actually liked though. But I had to re-dye it weekly with that stuff. Since manic panic is a vegetable based dye you could add it to your shampoo and conditioner without damaging your hair to help it fade out a little slower. Wish I knew a better brand to recommend for you. I have heard good things about Pravana and Ion Brights from others but personally have only tried their reds.

For purples, I recommend manic panic or any purple dye at a beauty store.
For red, I recommend garnier nutrisse or loreal hicolor.
For other unnatural colors, manic panic or any dye from a beauty store.
For natural colors, I recommend the cheap $3 dye, but of course, BRASSINESS, and you can fix brassiness with toner.

For your scalp, you may want to look into Paul Mitchell's Tea Tree Treatment. I have psoriasis on my scalp and it is a life saver!
