I had an allergic reaction to something one time and my regular doctor referred me to a dermatologist...that's the only time I actually visited a dermatologist and he charged 75.

I don't think it's too much, knowing about your skin is very important.

I was under the impression that with the new healthcare law, you are required to have insurance. Or has that part not started yet?

If you can't afford private insurance, apply for medicare or a state program. They have insurance on a sliding scale so that you won't have to go without coverage.

I've never been to a dermatologist that accepts uninsured patients, so I don't know if that is a good rate or not. My copay is $20, that's all I know. My skin cancer treatments and exams have all been from the hospital, so I pay a large chunk of that. Regular derm checkups only cost me the copay though.

If you are just trying to deal with acne and not a larger health concern (eczema, psoriasis, skin cancer, etc) maybe see an esthetician first, then see a derm later when you have insurance? That might be less expensive for you out of pocket.

I agree Jacqlyn. I had a seizure-like episode a couple of months ago and ended up unconscious with a potentially broken neck from the fall as well as a severe concussion. I was taken to the ER via ambulance, and had to wait OVER TWO HOURS in the waiting room strapped to a backboard before they could examine me, because of all of the Obamacare red tape. I don't remember what the paramedics said about it (I was in and out of it) but they were LIVID.

Plenty of dermatologist take cash and a lot of insurance doesn't cover dermatologist or even dental it depends on what you have.

And yes, after the new legislation all of my insurance costs went up as well. That was after I almost lost my insurance (despite the President's lies to the contrary). At least gynecology visits don't have a copay anymore. Oh wait, my insurance costs TRIPLED so I am paying more than I ever did before...

That's true Traci. Definitely search in your area and see what is available to you.

Thanks hon. I am doing better now, though I just found out I have skin cancer again. :/ I find out the results on Monday if it metastasized to anything. Fingers crossed that it didn't! This is my fourth about with skin cancer, ugh! First was basal cell carcinoma, then squamous cell carcinoma, then basal cell carcinoma again, and now melanoma. I mean come on! Can't catch a break.

Sorry, I'm rambling because I am exhausted. I better go to bed before I get off on another tangent. Goodnight ladies.

Good luck on whatever you end up doing, Carol. :)
