Try foursquare or Yelp. So helpful!

Shampoo Avenue B is pretty good and affordable. They also have a lot of lifebooker deals and a reward system.

Look in Allure magazine! They have reviews of salons and spas in a lot of big cities. They also include price! They're such great reviews. :)

Are you looking for Manhattan only? Or Brooklyn? There's this great one in park slope called FraJean.

Outer boroughs can be just as good at half the price. If you like someone's hair ask them! They will be flattered and you might find a gem. I go to J. Scott on E. 86th in Manhattan and they have different prices for different stylists depending on level of expertise-they are all good! They also use Aveda products which smell great and are far less damaging than some other lines. You might want to ask for a style that won't require a ton of upkeep so that you don't have to go too often.
