I like many books from Agatha Christie. She is my favourite writer. You can also try with stories of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov. His srories are really sad and I always cry when I read them. He wrote short stories so you can buy a book of them and write about some of them. My fave is ' A joke '. It is amazing. :-). And about film. Titanic is classic. You can try Aviator with Leonardo DiCaprio. And film you have to try is also illusionist. It is... Words can't describe it :-)

One of the most important writers in the US who is recognized as a classic is Edgar Allan Poe, he writes about horror and death and he has incredible short stories, for your presentation you should talk about his life and how it is related to the content of the stories, there is also a lot of inspired art about his books, it can help too.
