Not that smokey eyes have to be black, it's the wrong style. This is a smokey eye. Yours appears to be gradient.

@Katrin, your right, it doesn't have to be black. but it does have to be dark & dramatic to be considered a smokey eye :p

Pretty but not a smokey eye. A smokey eye usually consists of thew to four shadows. A dark one, lighter one, and an even lighter one. For example, you can start off by aplying your lid primer and such. Then apply a light brownish/nude shadow,, I like to apply mine from the bottom/middle of my brow bone down to the base of my upper lash line. Then I apply a darker reddish brown from just slightly above my natural crease, down to the same place. Next I apply a black shadow on my lid up to just below my natural crease, sometimes to it... The key is then to blend, blend, blend... It will not be a successful smokey eye unless the blending is so smooth that you cannot see where one color ends and the next starts... Here is an pic... This would be a perfect smokey eye if it didn't have the straight tape made edge... Smokey eyes a supposed to be more of a fluid natural rounded eye look. You know...smokey...
