Horrid Experience at Estee Lauder.

Maybe I'm being a bit dramatic, but the girl who applied my makeup today at Estee Lauder was awful. I went there to try the Double Wear foundation. I'm super super SUPER pale. I should have known better than to even go to their counter because I already knew the lightest shade would be too dark for me, but I was so curious as to what the foundation felt like on the skin.

I was originally just going to swatch it on the back of my hand but the girl quickly came over and insisted that she take off all of my makeup and apply it on my face. I was a little annoyed by it but I said okay (I have a hard time saying no when someone is just trying to be helpful). She put it on and it looked fine- probably a bit too dark but workable if I absolutely had to wear it. Then, she threw a colored powder on top of it (I only use translucent because again, I'm super pale and most powders are too dark for me) and THEN she literally COVERED my face in bronzer and a really dark blush. When I held the mirror up, it took everything I had not to scream. I wish I had taken a picture of this so you could see it, but the combination of the powder and the bronzer made everything AT LEAST 3 shades darker on me and there was a HUGE contrast between what was on my face and the color of my neck/chest. I seriously wanted to cry.

Then, she put a dark lipstick on me. It was a decent color, but she missed the whole top right corner of my lip, so after I left the counter, I had to smear it around with my finger to get it to cover that area.

I'm by no means a beginner when it comes to makeup but she kept talking down to me like I was a child. I don't know everything about makeup by any means, but I'm 22 and far from a child.

We had a few more places to go in the mall after that and I didn't look up once because I didn't want anyone to see me. Maybe I should have been more assertive, but I feel like any experienced person working in the beauty industry should be able to do a basic color match. I also get nervous speaking up in situations like that because I don't want to offend the person- I never quite know how to say "I'm not so sure I like this" in a nice way.

Needless to say, I'll stick to my trusty Illamasqua Skin Base in shade 2. It hasn't let me down yet!

Does anyone else have any beauty counter horror stories that might make me feel better about everything? Haha :)

I use double wear and I'm very pale. I use the lightest color, but the first time I went there they tried to put a darker color on me and I had to tell her no lol.

She used the lightest shade they had on me lol. My mom ended up buying it for me, as she was at the mall with me, and I'm going to try it again without all the nasty bronzer and blush she used, but I think it may still be too dark. We'll see! It's sad because I LOVED the way the foundation felt on my skin and it looked really beautiful, but I don't know if it will be a good color match.

This is shocking! I'm not one for complaining either but you should definitely copy this text into a letter and send it into the shop with the date and time you went in. Thanks for sharing this :)

I know how it feels like , I was in the same situation with a "girl" from Lancôme , horrible :) , I use Estée Lauder double wear foundation-ecru and I got a tiny small bottle from them and it works for me , I learned my lesson doh

This has happened to me, I went to the MAC counter at Nordstroms, and the girl looked at me, said I was nc42, then applied it, said it was too light, and used nc45 instead and said it was perfect. When I looked in the mirror, I looked like a damn Oompa Loompa, my face was straight orange. Of course I didn't want to say anything because I didn't want to offend her.

It's amazing how some of these people are allowed to apply makeup on other people! I was really upset with the result tonight. I looked like a clown and I think anyone who saw me would have agreed. She kept saying she knew what she was doing and I just needed to trust her. She made fun of the foundation (Illamasqua) I was currently wearing, but I happen to know that Illamasqua really and truly looks the most flawless on my skin. Why she felt the need to attack what I really liked was beyond me. She then went on to say that my eyebrows were way too dark and I need to use a "light hand" when applying my brow pencil. Well, duh. I don't go crazy on my brows, but they are naturally thick and dark to begin with. I just felt really hurt by the comments she was making. I'm a sensitive person to begin with, but I found her to be very unprofessional.

Wow I had a experience at sephora when a girl put a foundation that was 3 shades darker I looked like a orange and she out dark bronzed on me that looked terrible. Then a bright blush with red lipstick some ppl are so unporrfessional.

I used to work at Ulta, and I always tried my best to make recommendations that were realistic and practical. For example, I never recommended and sold a product that I had not personally tried and liked enough to personally spend money on. However, sometimes people are only good at doing their own makeup, and do not know how to be friendly and helpful towards other people.

It's best to talk to management, and share your experience with them. The job of a makeup salesperson is to educate customers about the products and brand in order to have people buy them and make certain sales goals. If the employee is offending/insulting/pushing away customers, then they are unable to sell the product. That job could go to someone else who is able to perform the duties of the job.

She did mention that she would be leaving the Estée Lauder counter in about 2 weeks and after my makeup application from her, I'm curious as to why. I wonder if she has gotten complaints before? I agree that some people just shouldn't be applying makeup on others. I know that I'm not good at it, therefore I wouldn't try to do it on anyone else. It was quite a disappointing experience.
