My fitness instructor told me that women shouldn't do situps as over time it can ruin our reproductive organs, however we can do crunches. I'd suggest that crunches, squats, lunges and tri-dips (I'm a gymnast and this is what I do)

Make sure to breastfeed that'll help you lose weight too. But 30 Day Shred is a cheap awesome video by Jillian Michaels that'll get you back in shape quick.

Don't do any stomach exercise while pregnant. but after the baby I lost my weight within a week. I breastfed and that helped a lot. I went from 142 to 120.to this day I still haven't some any exercise and you can't even tell I had a baby.
I wore a girdle for 30 days and that helped a lot!

There are three parts you need to consider: Diet, strengthening, and cardio.
For cardio, try to do 90 minutes per week. It can be anything from running, cycling, jumping rope, jumping jacks, hula hooping - whatever gets your heart rate going!
Strengthening: Squats and crunches alone will help very little. There are a lot of different muscles you need to work on in order to see results, and doing one exercise will only target a small amount of them. I don't like situps because it's too easy to strain your back or neck, which over time will cause problems you really don't want to be dealing with. For good conditioning workouts, try the Nike Training Club and 7 minute workout apps, and Blogilates, Fitsugar, and XHit YouTube videos. If you really want a challenge, try P90X and Jillian Michaels 6 Weeks 6 pack.
And finally, diet! This is easy to neglect, but if you only focus on exercise, you'll be left with a layer of muscle that's hidden underneath a layer fat. Cardio burns fat, true, but it burns muscle first because it's easier to burn. Don't look at a number on a scale, because muscle weighs more than fat. You want your muscle mass to go up and body fat to go down. In order to do this, I suggest limiting your carb intake to twice weekly at the most. Make sure it's good carbs (brown bread, rice, pasta, erc. > white). Increase your protein intake (protein shakes are good!). Incorporate more fruits and veggies into your dier. Green smoothies, trail mix, and fruit salad all make great snacks. Eat as clean as you can; snack on raw foods and juices, have veggies with every meal, and drink lots of water.

How do you lose the 1/2 layer over the abs? I could do sit ups for days, but they're covered for good...

What I do is a crossfit workout. If you have a gym somewhere with a track, run one lap and when you get back do 10 squats, then 10 sit ups, then 10 crunches. Repeat that 4x which will result in you running a mile, and working out all at once. It takes less than 10 mins for me, but time varies per person. As your time gets better, add more to the work out. For example do 15 squats, sit ups, and crunches. Or add in 10 lunges, sumo squats, leg lifts, etc. Make the work out your own! And remember you can't lose weight without at least a semi-balanced diet :) good luck!

You should definitely try Pilates classes! Here is a helpful guide: http://www.babycentre.co.uk/a563313/pilates-in-pregnancy
Just don't try to do exercises at home while pregnant; you can easily injure yourself if you're activating the wrong muscles, in the wrong position, or have incorrect posture. More importantly, you risk injuring your baby. Take classes with a licensed and qualified professional and you'll be fine :)
