I went to a dermatologist for the first time ever yesterday and one of the things she prescribed was a retinoid called Tretinoin. Before I go further, I'm just going to say I plan on doing as she told me, but I would like some feedback on this. She told me to NOT use a night time moisturizer anymore when I use the retinoid cream at night. I'm a little put off by that because from my understanding they can be very harsh and drying. Is that normal/is there some reason why a moisturizer is not good to use with it? It didn't feel like my skin was dry when I put it on though, it was actually a lot more moist than I expected. Obviously if I have severe drying issues down the road I'll contact her but I just wanted some opinions from some of the people on here because I know there's some really knowledgeable ladies (like Traci and Shelley :) so I figured I'd get some extra insight.

I didn't use the exact cream as you but I dried out completely. It was a few years ago but I do remember being so so dry and flaky I didn't want to go to school cause it was so embarrassing. Did she say put the cream all over your face or just on problem areas? Cause if I were you I would just do problem areas and moisturize everywhere else. I mean all skin is different but my experience sucked with that stuff

I've had several derms tell me that it's fine to use with moisturizer. I was told you could use the retinoid and put moisturizer over the top or put moisturizer on first and then apply the retinoid. I never had any issues doing this and it definitely helped with the drying.

Yea I thought it was kind of odd that she blatantly told me to skip it all together. I should have asked about it but I was just trying to make sure I was understanding what she was telling me about all the medications. I walked out with 3 prescriptions which kind of caught me off guard lol. I figured I'd leave with at least one but not 3. But hopefully it helps. I'll see how this retinoid goes and take it from there. This is only my first go at prescription medication for acne so I'll just try to ride it out.

You should definitely use a moisturizer. You might have heard this before, but when your skin is dry, it starts producing more oils to compensate. More oils = more clogged pores = more acne. When I first started with a tretinoin gel, I was lazy and didn't use a moisturizer. After about a week it felt like it was burning a hole in my skin, and it was red, dry, and flakey. Not a good look! You can give her a call and ask, because I'm obviously not a professional, but my advice would be to keep moisturizing.

Yea, the more I'm thinking about this I would be very silly to NOT use a moisturizer. I definitely know all about the skin producing even more oil when dry though and that also had me concerned. I'm also home in PA for a bit and it has been RIDICULOUSLY cold so my skin is already at risk of being dry despite usually being oily. I have been using CeraVe anyway so I think I can get away with it. I want this acne gone but I don't want to absolutely torture my skin in the process. I'm on doxycycline and AcZone gel in the morning as well.
